Jazz Composers Orchestra

CD (Item 599702) JCOA/ECM (Germany), 1968 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

CD

✈

The classic meeting of the brain trust of the avant garde jazz scene, recorded for the young JCOA label, and put forth as one of their early attempts to prove that musicians could be in charge of the means of production. This double LP set features a set of compositions by Michael Mantler (who also conducted), with pieces dedicated to presenting solos by Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Roswell Rudd, and Gato Barbieri. Searing stuff, with a hard New York avant sound.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Art Lande & Jan Garbarek

Red Lanta
ECM (Germany), 1974. Used
A standout moment from pianist Art Lande – maybe his best-remembered date for the ECM label – in part because the record features wonderful work from Jan Garbarek on flute, soprano, and bass saxophone! The simple duet mode is a bit different here than on other ECM dates – as ... CD

Gary Burton

New Quartet
ECM (Germany), 1973. Used
A fantastic 70s album from Gary Burton – a set that definitely has the "new" promised in the title, as it takes off more from some of Gary's work in previous years! The record's got this explosive sense of color that really comes through in Gary's vibes – and in the way the ... CD

Gary Burton

Ring
ECM (Germany), 1974. Used
One of Gary Burton's more free-flowing albums of the 70s – a bit more fusion than some of his other work of the time, with key guitar contributions from Mick Goodrick and a young Pat Metheney! The album's still filled with plenty of Burton's great work on vibes, but the guitars also soar ... CD

Albert Ayler

Live On The Riviera
ESP, 1970. Used
A previously unreleased live performance by Albert Ayler – recorded in France in 1970 for the Maeght Foundation, but not the same material that was issued on the better-known Shandar albums! This concert predates those, and is a unique later outing that's strongly in the spirit of some of ... CD

George Benson

White Rabbit
CTI, 1971. Used
One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. The record was put together by Don Sebesky, and it's a lot more high concept than some of George's earlier work – and ... CD
