We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Half & Half
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+
One of the oddest Eddie Harris records for Vee Jay! One side's got a very young Muhal Richard Abrams doing the arrangements and playing piano, and features two great original tracks "Half & Half" and the extended "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah", which features chanting & percussion. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kelly Great
Vee Jay, 1960. Very Good+
One of Wynton Kelly's greatest albums, and an all-star hardbop session that includes Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. With Philly Joe on drums, and Morgan and Shorter, the LP almost has the feel of a classic Art Blakey session for Blue Note, but Kelly's piano gives ... LP, Vinyl record album

Swingin'est
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good-
A hard set of soul jazz grooves – recorded under the leadership of the great trombonist Benny Green, and one of his few albums not for Blue Note or Prestige! The sound is very much in the Prestige hardbop mode of the late 50s – and Green heads up a group that includes Gene Ammons and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Juggin' Around
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good-
A hard-hitting blowing session, cut very much in the mode of Gene's late 50s sides for Prestige – and with a very accomplished group of soul jazzers that includes Nat Adderley, Frank Foster, Bennie Green, and Frank Wess. The groove has a nice raw late night sound – and tracks are ... LP, Vinyl record album

Study In Jazz
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good-
A landmark LP by Eddie Harris – one that we go back to again and again over the years! The album shows not only the brilliance of the young Eddie Harris (a brilliance that was not easily matched later in his career), but also the brilliant way that the Chicago jazz scene of the 60's could ... Contemplation
Vee Jay/Affinity (UK), 1960. Near Mint-
An obscure moment in Yusef Lateef's career – and a great one too! The material on this set was recorded in 1960 for Vee Jay Records, but wasn't issued until the mid 70s – and even then, only briefly, on a short-lived pressing that soon went out of print. That status doesn't stop the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love You Madly
Vee Jay, Late 40s. Very Good
Rare live material from Duke Ellington – first issued back in the 70s, but undoubtedly recorded decades before! The set's got a nicely gritty feel – that Ellington orchestra approach before they'd gotten too sure of themselves, and had lots of sharp edges – as you'll hear in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bird Lives!
Vee Jay, 1962. Very Good+
In the years after Charlie Parker passed away, tributes to his greatness were a very common thing in local jazz scenes across the US. This is a prime example of that tradition, but way more than that, it's also a killer Chicago jazz session from the old days – featuring trumpeter Ira ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1962/1978. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A pair of great unreleased Stanley Turrentine albums for Blue Note – issued here for the first time ever! First up is Comin Your Way – one of our favorite-ever albums from the great Stanley Turrentine – a really hard-burning session from his earliest days as a leader – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

World Pacific, 1962. Very Good
Victor Feldman plays piano and vibes on this trio set of tracks from the score to the hit Broadway show. The sound is pretty straight, but the real highlight here is the great lost LA drummer Lawrence Marable, who is nice and free, and gets more room to move than in his usual soul jazz outings. ...
