Jazz Variations On Movie Themes

LP (Item 59878) Reprise, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
The title tells the whole tale of the album – as pianist Jackson plays jazzy versions of themes from films that include "Never On A Sunday", "A Summer Place", "From Here To Eternity", "The High & The Mighty", "Exodus", "Return To Peyton Place", and "High Noon". A number of tracks are piano solos, and others feature backings by bassist Al McKibbon and drummer Frank Capp.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Erroll Garner

One World Concert
Reprise, Early 60s. Very Good+
A set with an ambitious title, but a nicely earthy feel – a live recording that features Erroll Garner's trio with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – stretching out strongly in front of a live audience – recorded live at the Seattle World's Fair, but with a vibe ... Count Basie

Pop Goes The Basie
Reprise, 1964. Near Mint-
Count Basie goes pop, and the results are mighty nice – a hard-swinging take on familiar tunes from the 60s, but all re-tooled the jazzy Basie way! The vibe here is right up there with the best Neal Hefti moments with the group – and although the arrangements are by Billy Byers, they've ... LP, Vinyl record album
Reprise, 1965. Very Good+
One of the great entries in Duke Ellington's "exotic" albums of the 60s – records that aren't exactly exotica by any stretch of the imagination, but which have musical themes that were inspired by the international travels of the Ellington band at the time! In this case, the locale ... LP, Vinyl record album
Reprise, 1961. Near Mint-
A wonderful wonderful set from Barney Kessel – bossa-inflected jazz, and a wonderful setting for Barney to hit some very groovy lines on electric guitar! The group on the date is part of the strength of the record – with Conte Candoli on trumpet, Emil Richards on vibes, Paul Horn on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Count Basie

This Time By Basie!
Reprise, 1963. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 14.99
We totally dig Basie's work from the mid 60s! He was working with Quincy Jones at the time – and Quince laid down some very soulful arrangements that used the best jazz elements of the Basie group to turn out some great pop instrumental tracks with a very groovy sound. This album's a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

One
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! This is the album where all the magic starts – the first of many extremely successful albums that Bob recorded during the 70s under his own name, and almost the birthplace of the modern hip hop ... Sonny Criss

Jazz USA
Imperial, 1956. Near Mint-
One of Sonny Criss' classic albums for Imperial – a brilliant batch of LA bop from the 50s, with an impeccable sound throughout! Criss had a tone like nobody else on the alto – and here, he's at the height of his early powers – neither blowing too hard, nor going for boppish ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weather Report

Mysterious Traveller
Columbia, 1974. Sealed
A new sense of focus in the Weather Report sound – that building, soaring groove that would become the group's trademark in the mid 70s – offered up here in one of it's first and finest examples! The approach is one to describe accurately on paper – but which is instantly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

ESP
Columbia, 1965. Very Good+
An album of dark and subtle beauty – and still one of our favorite Miles Davis albums of all time! The set's not as earth-shattering as some of Davis' other work of the 60s, but that's why we like it so much – because the emerging genius of the group with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, ... Mosaic, Early 50s. Near Mint- 4LP Box Set
The trumpet of Chet Baker was hard pressed to find a better accompanist than the piano of Russ Freeman – and the pair made some incredible recordings during Baker's early years at Pacific Jazz. This lovely set by Mosaic brings together all of the recordings cut during the time, and although ... LP, Vinyl record album

Idris Muhammad

Boogie To The Top
Kudu, 1977. Very Good+
Classic middle period work from drummer Idris Muhammad – a set recorded after his initial run of lean funk recordings for the jazz scene – with a bit more soul in the mix, and definitely a bit of boogie in the groove! Arrangements are by David Matthews – the maestro of the soul-st ... LP, Vinyl record album
