Drum Feast

LP (Item 598210) United Artists, 1959 — Condition: Very Good+
A great one from arranger Manny Albam – heavy on drums, but with some nice exotic touches too! No players listed – but we're guessing it's a pretty hip lineup!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Black label stereo pressing – a nice copy! Back cover has some light staining, front is great.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Coral, 1955. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great 4-part suite that rivals any of Manny Albam's other sessions from the time – including Jazz Greats Of Our Time, or Jazz New York – and, like that one, a set that's filled with top-shelf jazz talents at the time! The tracks here are all quite long, and done in a bluesy mode that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer

Brass Shout
United Artists, 1959. Very Good+
A great little album by this wonderful trumpeter – and one that we passed up for years because we were afraid of the words "brass" and "shout" in the title! If you're a Farmer fan, though, don't worry about this being some sort of snoozy "bold n brassy" session ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

Three Blind Mice (Douglas Collection pressing)
United Artists, 1962. Near Mint-
A really unusual live set from the great Art Blakey – his only album for the United Artists label, but one that continues the tradition of the expanded group style he was starting to use at Blue Note! The lineup here is a sextet, one that's got even more power than the Jazz Messengers as a ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1958. Near Mint-
This is the small combo recording of tracks from the legendary jazz score to I Want To Live! Although not featured that prominently in the film, the band of Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Bud Shank, and others were a pretty tight little group – even though it was strange to see this west coast ... United Artists, 1958. Very Good+
One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Johnny Mandel composed the memorable score for this late 50's film starring Susan Hayward, and the music is played by Mandel's orchestra of west coast players like Jack Sheldon, Bill Holman, Joe Maini, Shelly Manne, and others. The whole thing's a ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1963. Sealed
An excellent bit of early 60s soulbop – and one of two rare albums ever cut by the obscure female alto player Vi Redd, one of the few women sax players of her generation to get recorded! The album's got an easygoing groove that's mighty nice – a touch of R&B at times, but not ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rex Stewart & The Fletcher Henderson Alumni

Henderson Homecoming
United Artists, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Trumpeter Rex Stewart heads a great lineup of players from the Fletcher Henderson band – including Joe Thomas and Taft Jordan on trumpets, Benny Morton and Dicky Wells on tormbones, Buddy Tate and Hilton Jefferson on saxes, and Red Richards on piano! LP, Vinyl record album

Earl Klugh

Heart String
United Artists, 1978. Very Good+
Earl Klugh's definitely got his heart on his strings here – working in this warm, mellow mode that's mighty nice – set to gentle orchestrations by Dave Matthews, which work perfect for Klugh's groove! There's nothing too over the top here, and Earl mixes acoustic and electric in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1959. Very Good+
Great stuff – recorded in Mingus' classic period! Mingus leads a sharp small group here – a wonderful quintet that features Booker Ervin on tenor, John Handy on alto, and Richard Wyands on piano – with longtime musical partner Dannie Richmond on drums! The session was recorded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earl Klugh

Dream Come True
United Artists, 1980. Near Mint-
Warm guitar magic from Earl Klugh – exactly the kind of record that helped cement his fame at the start of the 80s – making Klugh one of the leading guitarists of his time! The style's often a bit mellow, but never in a sleepy way – just a great extension of the mode that Earl ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Sharrock

Black Woman
Vortex, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the best-ever Sonny Sharrock albums – and one of the few that really captures the fresh genius of his approach! The set was recorded in New York during the period when Sonny had just come out of Herbie Mann's group with Roy Ayers – but the sound is far far different than the ... LP, Vinyl record album
