We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Thanks For Nothing
Reprise, 1964. Very Good
A surprisingly dark, smoky set of tunes from Rosemary Clooney – a rare set for Reprise, and her last new LP to appear until the late 70s! Rosemary cuts a number of well known numbers here, which is not a surprise, but the number of searingly bleak tunes here does make it a bit of a jolt ... LP, Vinyl record album

A unique moment from the legendary Jimmy Scott – a one-off album cut for Atlantic Records – recorded after his initial 50s fame, and decades before he'd finally get his due, much later in his life! Ernestine Anderson at the height of her powers – caught during a very successful run at Concord Records, where she was easily one of the hippest things going down at the time! A killer from Nancy – very different than most of her earlier work, and proof that she was still growing as an artist on Capitol! MGM, 1963. Very Good+
A pretty hip album of jazz vocal numbers by Pat Thomas – made even hipper by arrangements from Claus Ogerman and Lalo Schifrin! The style of the record's a bit like Lorez Alexandria's work from the same time – part jazz, part soul, and all-solid all the way through vocally – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Not the sleepy tunes you might guess from the "lullaby" in the title – but a wonderful collection of early small group material from vocalist Chris Connor! The set's got a very unusual format – in that the group's instrumentation is really different than the regular piano ... LP, Vinyl record album

Haunting set of stripped down tracks by the brilliant Yusef Lateef, who not only plays his usual assortment of reeds here – tenor, alto, flute, and oboe – but also lays down a bit of theremin!
