Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

At Newport '63
RCA, 1963. Very Good-
The Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross tradition lives on – in a smoking live set that features Indian singer Yolanda Bavan joining the group in place of recently-departed Ross! Bavan's ability to groove and improvise is every bit as great as that of Annie Ross – and she fits in nicely ... LP, Vinyl record album
Strata East, 1976. Very Good+
A strange one for Strata East, but in a way, still very much in keeping with the label's tradition. Billy C is a smooth-voiced, deep-toned vocalist – in the tradition of jazz singers like Johnny Hartman or Grady Tate – and his sensitive vocals here are backed by a group that includes ... Jools & Brian
Capitol, 1969. Very Good
Great UK beat group grooves from the late 60's – featuring the amazing voice of Julie Driscoll and the hard Hammond organ sounds of Brian Auger! Auger's working here with his Trinity group – the small combo that had a firey Jimmy McGriff-like quality – as you'll hear on their ... LP, Vinyl record album
At The Village Gate
Colpix, 1961. Very Good
An album recorded relatively early in the career of singer Nina Simone – but a set that already shows the very unique approach that would make her a legend by the time the 60s moved on! Even the very first tune is a stunner – a haunting reworking of the favorite "Just In Time" ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great set of rare early material by Betty Carter – and just about the only way you'll ever find these titles on vinyl! Colpix, 1959. Very Good+
An important early live show for Nina – a move to the classy Town Hall crowd, filled with left-leaning listeners who were the perfect audience to get the unique bag she was working on at the time – heard in very appreciative tones throughout the set! The performance is a great one ... LP, Vinyl record album
Flying Dutchman, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Wonderful work from Leon Thomas – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and a set that was recorded at the same time he was working with Pharoah Sanders! Let Me In Your Life
LMI, 1972. Very Good+

Velvet Mood
Verve, 1955. Fair
A velvet mood, but one with a bit of an edge – as you might expect from Billie Holiday in the 50s, hardly the stuff of a too-soft vocal date! The album's got Holiday working in wonderful small combo mode – getting some key Verve backup from players who include Sweets Edison on trumept, ... LP, Vinyl record album
By Special Request
Decca, 1955. Very Good+
A cool session for Decca that has Carmen's vocals flowing out wonderfully amidst some very haunting backings! The sound here is a bit unusual – given that the groups are headed by accordion Mat Mathews and pianist Dick Katz – both of whom have a good ear for unusual phrasing, and who ... In A New Mood
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good-
Great jazzy work by this excellent singer – a tight set featuring Oscar Brown Jr. performing jazz material written (mostly) by other composers, shifting the focus away from his earlier records, which have more of his own compositions. Ralph Burns and Al Cohn handled the arrangements – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Della Reese Live
ABC, 1966. Very Good+
One of Della Reese's greatest records – and a unique little session cut "live in the studio" before a very appreciative crowd!
