✈
A selection of tracks from the 5 CD box set The Holloywood All Star Sessions – late recordings by Pepper, made between the years 1979 and 1982, after he'd got his bag back together, and was really cutting a lot of fine fine sessions! The tracks were all recorded in Hollywood by James Mooney – and feature a range of players that includes Russ Freeman, Pete Jolly, Lee Konitz, Bill Watrous, Jack Sheldon, and other LA jazz luminaries who were still shining brightly at the time. Titles include "Begin The Beguine", "Bernie's Tune", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "My Funny Valentine", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Widows Taste, 1981. Used 2 CDs
A great late live date from Art Pepper – as well-recorded and as strongly played as his best work of the time on Galaxy or Contemporary Records – and done with a similar group as well! The album's no cheapy concert for the overseas crowd – as Art's working here with George Cables ... CD

Art Pepper

Discovery Sessions
Savoy, Early 50s. Used
Some of the best Art Pepper work you'll ever find! The CD is filled with tracks that were originally cut for Savoy Records during the time of Art's Surf Ride album for that label – some of which were included on the album, others of which are equally wonderful, but which were lost on the ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1977. Used
A record that marks the live recording debut of the alto giant Art Pepper – quite a surprise, given that he'd already had many years of playing under his belt – but also a date that captures Art at a time of real revival in his career – stretching out with new inspirations, and a ... CD
Contemporary/Victor (Japan), 1956. Used

Johnny Griffin

Return Of The Griffin
Galaxy/OJC, 1979. Used
Tremendous work from Johnny Griffin – one of those players whose talents never dimmed at all – and who's blowing here with all the same sharp intensity he first brought to his initial work in the 50s! The date's a tight acoustic session – with Johnny's bold tenor firmly in the ... CD

Tommy Flanagan & Hank Jones

Our Delights
Galaxy/OJC, 1979. Used
Twin pianos from Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones – with no other instrumentation – played in some great ways that provide an equal balance of rhythmic pulse and lyrical melody! The set's got a sweet stereo split – so that Tommy's in the right channel, and Hank is in the left – ... CD
Sony (Japan), 1982. Used
Blood's groundbreaking LP that gave a name and energy to the 80's Black Rock movement. Recorded post-Ornette, but with a wild sound that certainly shows his influence. Cuts include "Open House", "Black Rock", "Moon Beam", "Overnight", and "We Bop". CD

Freddie Hubbard

Hub Of Hubbard
MPS (Japan), 1969. Used
A classic European date from Freddie Hubbard – recorded right around the vintage of his Red Clay years, but with a sound that hearkens back more towards his Blue Note sessions of the mid 60s! There's a nicely angular feel to this set – that bold, modern quality that really set Hubbard ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1955. Used
A nice little bit of bop from LA – a tightly-crafted mid 50s date for the Bethlehem label – featuring drummer Stan Levey at the head of a great group of horn players! The album features some standout work from Dexter Gordon on tenor – making a rare appearance here as a sideman ... CD

Johnathan Blake

Passage
Blue Note, 2023. Used

Limelight/EmArcy, 1959. Used
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city ... CD
Transition/Delmark, 1956. Used
Sun Ra's first album as a leader – originally issued on the Transition label, but presented here in its better-known incarnation by Delmark Records! Even at this early point, Ra had a sound unlike any of his contemporaries – large group and modern, but not in a way that showed any ... CD
