A killer album of Chicago soul – from one of the city's most overlooked singers! Joann's got a style that's both hard and sophisticated – a bit like Marlena Shaw from the same time – and she's produced to perfection by Andre Williams, who handles the session with a lot more care than his usual funky 45s. The backgrounds were arranged by John Richardson, and they have a striden loping groove that's a bit in the Brunswick Chisoul mode – and which works especially well with the material chosen for the album. Tracks include Billy Butler's great "Foolish Me", plus "We Can Learn Together", "Soul Town", "It's No Secret", "Ain't No Way", and a great reading of "Unforgettable". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
