We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Buddah, Late 60s. Near Mint-
An early 70s set from Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band – but one that was actually recorded in the mid 60s – a bit before the classic Trout Mask Replica! The set shows Beefheart and the band at their most unbridled – really jamming with bluesy roots, but into the very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prophesy, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
Nice bit of rockin' funky soul by a band that we know little about, but who seem to be an LA rock band that's obsessed with soul music. The LP contains a great 11 minute version of "Cold Sweat", played with a lot of funky vamping by the band in a JB's style. There's also a nice version ... LP, Vinyl record album
Myrrh, 1974. Very Good
Okay, we'll admit it, this is not the sort of record you're going to buy to listen to all the way through, unless you're into 70s Christian rock, which it's not the most terrible example of. For the rest of you, it does have a monster funky drum break that's ripe for sampling! The cut's "The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Venture, Late 60s. Good
A weird late 60s set from this California group – one that's got a rocking small combo feel at parts, but a partly rural sound too! The vibe's almost like some of the party groups that played the southern circuit in the 60s, but a bit more west coast too – never really psyche or fuzz, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sire, 1978. Near Mint-
Working class British punk at it's brash, dumb best. We'd be stretching it a bit to rate this album a classic, but it's definitely worth revisiting from time to time, and has stood up better than a lot of other late 70s rock. Includes "Tell Us The Truth", "Rip Off", "We ... LP, Vinyl record album
Songs For A Tailor
Atco, 1969. Very Good+
A wild batch of jazz rock tunes – recorded by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce, along with a host of like-minded luminaries that include Chris Spedding, Harry Beckett, Dick Heckstall-Smith, and John Hisemann. Unlike Bruce's first solo album – Things We Like – which was an all-jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cotillion, 1972. Very Good+
A surprisingly great batch of kick ass rock and roll tunes – southern fried, but done with a cosmic undercurrent that makes for a mighty weird approach! The drums are amazing – fierce right from the get-go, in a way that has made the record a favorite with break collectors for years ... LP, Vinyl record album
Their Second Album
MGM, Mid 60s. Good+
More craziness from one of the best party bands of the 60s – the 2nd full LP by the group, and a wild workout of familiar covers and a few originals. Titles include "Ju Ju Hand", "I've Got A Voo Doo Doll", "The Gypsy", "Magic Man", "Medicine ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful little solo record from synthesizer legend Bernie Krause – best known as half of the legendary Beaver & Krause team, but stepping out here on his own after the untimely early death of Paul Beaver.
