2 classic Atlantic sessions by Roland Kirk! The wonderful Volunteered Slavery is our favorite Roland Kirk album, and a beautiful mix of two different styles. Side one's got Roland doing these crazy takes on late 60's pop cuts like "My Cherie Amour" and "Say a Little Prayer", plus his own "songs" (with vocals and everything!). Side two has him running through a tight live set from Newport 1968, and playing non-stop, with fire throughout. Both sides are fantastic – and the album's a brilliant testament to his nutty genius, and proof that it worked the best when it was at its nuttiest! Blacknuss features moody jazz versions of some of the biggest soul hits of the early 70's – including tracks like "What's Going On", "Mercy Mercy Me", and "Ain't No Sunshine" – plus some other nice originals which sum up his take on "blacknuss". Titles include "Blacknuss", "Which Way Is It Going", and "One Nation". Billy Butler is on guitar, and the great Sonelius Smith is on piano on a number of tracks.
