Genius in one of its purest forms! Paul Desmond's alto sax was honed to perfection by the time of these recordings – worked out through fame in the Dave Brubeck Quartet years of the late 50s and early 60s, but also relaxed in a confidence that makes these sides completely majestic, and utterly fantastic! Desmond's tone and approach are languid – but in a way that's incredibly compelling: notes just floating out of the horn, almost effortlessly, seeming not to come from Desmond himself, but to him, gathered together by his warmth and good wit, honed in further by the spare and gentle guitar work of the great Jim Hall. This package is the finest tribute we could think of to their brilliant work together – a wonderfully-done 5CD set, with a lovely slipcase and book, done in a way that retains the structure of the original albums, yet also adds in bonus tracks. There's a whopping 55 cuts in all – and every single one of them's a gem!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print. Cover has light shelf wear but this is a nice copy overall.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

George Russell Smalltet

Jazz Workshop
RCA/Bluebird, 1957. Used
Very hip early work from George Russell – a set that's maybe not as high-concept as some of his later records, but which still has a strikingly modern vibe! Russell's trying out some of his new tonal ideas here – and has a group that's very well-chosen for the project – with Art ... CD

Sonny Rollins

Standard Sonny Rollins
RCA, 1964. Used
There's nothing standard about this one – as the record's an excellent batch of work from Sonny and his "& Co" lineup that featured Jim Hall on guitar and Herbie Hancock on piano! The format's a bit unusual for Rollins, in that not all the players of the group play at once ... CD

Al Cohn

Natural Seven
RCA, 1955. Used
The Natural Seven is Al's septet that features Joe Newman, Frank Rehack, Freddie Green, Milt Hinton, Nat Pierce, and Osie Johnson. The group grooves in the usual tightly arranged Cohn style, with lots of ensemble playing, and some short clipped solos. Titles include "The Natural Thing To ... CD

Sonny Rollins

What's New?
RCA/Bluebird, 1962. Used

Kai Winding & JJ Johnson

Afternoon At Birdland
RCA/BMG (Germany), 1954. Used
One of the best sessions cut by Kai and JJ during the 50's, and a good live session with a lot looser feel than some of their studio sessions – which tend to be a bit restrained. The rhythm section features Dick Katz, Al Harewood, and Peck Morrison – but the main solos are held by Kai ... CD

Stan Getz

Nobody Else But Me
Verve, 1964. Used
One of the greatest Stan Getz albums ever – even though it wasn't issued until the 90s! The set's a rare unreleased session from 1964 – recorded by Getz with a fresh, free-thinking approach – but abandoned by Verve because they were making so much money with Stan's bossa nova ... CD

Kenny Burrell

Night At The Vanguard
Argo/Verve, 1959. Used
A hip live date from Kenny Burrell – recorded with a trio that includes Richard Davis on bass and Roy Haynes on drums – both of whom help Kenny find a groove that's a bit lighter and more fluid than usual! The rhythms here are quite gentle, almost spare at times – and always ... CD
