One of the few records ever cut as a leader by Pony Poindexter – the enigmatic sax player who spent most of his better years in Europe, and missed getting the stateside recognition he deserved. This set's recorded back in the US, in California at the end of the 70s – and it's got Pony blowing easy-going solos on alto with a quartet that includes Neal Kirkwood on piano, Art Washington on bass, and Richie Goldberg on drums. The album's pretty laidback, and although the tracks lack the nice groove of some of Pony's best European material, his tone on the alto still has that raspy edge that always makes him one of our favorite players on the instrument.
