Eternal Equinox

LP (Item 58909) World Pacific, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good-
Gatefold

One of Gerald Wilson's hippest albums for World Pacific – and all of them are pretty darn hip! This set is one of Gerald's last for the label – cut in a run of very successful, and very strong big band soul jazz albums that brought together the cream of the crop of the LA underground. Like the other sets, this one's got a great lineup – with players that include Anthony Ortega, Hadley Caliman, Harold Land, Ernie Watts, and Bobby Hutcherson – but the real strength of the album lies with Groove Holmes, who cuts some pretty fantastic solos on the album's best tracks – bubbling his Hammond through the larger arrangements with the space and expression that Wilson allowed his individual players on these sessions. Titles include great versions of "Aquarius" and Coltrane's "Equinox" – plus the original tunes "Celestial Soul", "Scorpio Rising", "Pisces", and "Bluesnee".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has surface wear and half split seams.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pacific Jazz, 1965. Sealed
The title's a weird one, because the album was recorded in the studio and not on stage – but we're hardly going to complain, because the record's so great! Wilbert Longmire

Revolution
World Pacific, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
An excellent album from funky guitarist Wilbert Longmire – probably his best, in our opinion! The album was recorded in LA with some very hip arrangements from Joe Sample – at the head of a largeish soul jazz group that includes usual suspects from the LA scene, like Paul Humphrey, ... Clifford Scott

Lavender Sax
World Pacific, Early 60s. Very Good+
One of the few albums as a leader by saxophonist Clifford Scott – best known for his tenor work on Bill Doggett's classic small combo records for King, but stepping out here in a completely different mode! The album has Scott working with a cool west coast group – Charles Kynard on ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's last truly fantastic albums – a set that still has all the amazingly messed-up qualities of his best late 60s work – delivered with the honest heart and sense of soul that always make us love his music! Blue Note, 1974. Very Good-

Richard Groove Holmes

American Pie
Groove Merchant, Early 70s. Very Good+
Tasty small group work from Groove – with Mr Holmes himself on organ, and the great Larry Willis on electric piano – coming up with a twin electric organ/piano sound that's similar to the one that Groove used on his Comin On Home LP for Blue Note. The difference here is that things ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ole
Atlantic, 1961. Very Good-
A magnificent record from John Coltrane – one of his earliest expressions of unbridled spirituality, and a session that we've treasured for years! As you might guess from the title, there's a slight Latin focus to the record – but not one that has congas and bongos creating choppy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal '73
20th Century, 1973. Very Good
Amazing stuff from Ahmad Jamal – one of his greatest albums ever, and the kind of Fender Rhodes classic that got passed over in the history books, but which is finally getting some appreciation these days! Ahamad's in a very different mode than his Cadet/Argo years – using the mellow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Forever Taurus
Milestone, 1976. Very Good
Johnny recorded this one right after his legendary Gears album, and it features production by Wade Marcus that's very much in the Larry Mizell mode that made Johnny huge in the 70s! Blue Note, 1963. Very Good
