Jimmy Owens

LP (Item 5889) A&M, 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Great stuff from trumpeter Jimmy Owens! Owens was always one of the hipper talents on his instrument during the 70s, and this A&M set features him in a nice groovy group that includes 2 guitars, and piano by Kenny Barron. The tracks are long, and offer Owens chance to open up amidst the shifting soundscapes and soulful rhythms. Titles include "What's The Use", "Do It To It", "My Life", and a great version of "Caravan".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

George Benson

Other Side Of Abbey Road
CTI/A&M, 1969. Near Mint-
A wonderfully wicked album – one that sold so many copies that it's sometimes hard to remember how great it is! George takes on all of Abbey Road – or just about all of it – as he runs through some of the most beautiful tracks The Beatles ever wrote, like "Golden ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Smackwater Jack
A&M, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great bit of 70s electric work from Quincy – and probably his funkiest album ever! Quincy's really stepping out here from the straighter and spacier styles of earlier records – going for more of the dirty grooves he was cutting up for soundtrack albums, and hitting notes that were a ... Chuck Mangione

Bellavia
A&M, 1975. Very Good+
With Mangione on flugelhorn and Rhodes, Gerry Niewood on saxophones and flute, Joe La Barbera on drums and percussion, and Chip Jackson on electric bass. Coordinated by Kai Winding, with Lew Soloff on lead and concert master Gerald Vinci. LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

You've Got It Bad Girl
A&M, 1973. Very Good+
Sweet funky Q for the 70s – easily one of the coolest albums ever from Quincy Jones! The album's got a very heavy electric vibe – one that's kind of a laidback take on the styles that Jones was forging in some of his 70s soundtrack work – served up with massive work on the ... Gato Barbieri

Caliente
A&M, 1976. Near Mint-
One of Gato Barbieri's later recordings – but don't hold that against it! The set's a smoother effort than most of Gato's earlier work, but it's also still pretty darn soulful – done in a way that allows plenty of space for his raspy reed work on tenor to flow over the top of larger ... Wes Montgomery

Road Song
A&M/CTI, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Beautifully lofty work from the great Wes Montgomery – a set that was recorded quite late in his too-short career, and really points the way towards some of the sophisticated sounds that might have followed, had Wes not left this planet all too soon! Don Sebesky is at the head of the charts ... LP, Vinyl record album
A&M, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of our favorite Paul Desmond records of all time – a set of understated brilliance that really lets him display his genius! Desmond at this time had been lost in some other sets that respected his talents, but didn't offer the greatest proof that he'd been growing as an artist – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chuck Mangione

Chase The Clouds Away
A&M, 1975. Sealed
A great one from that period when Chuck Mangione was mixing his sublime flugelhorn sound with some well-crafted larger ideas – served up with a core combo that features Chuck on Fender Rhodes as well as his horn, plus Chip Jackson on bass, Joe LaBarbera on drums, and Gerry Niewood on soprano, ... Wes Montgomery

Down Here On The Ground
CTI/A&M, 1968. Near Mint-
Super-dope work from the great Wes Montgomery – set to excellent early CTI arrangements from Don Sebesky and Deodato! The groove is nice and airy – with Wes' guitar floating over the top, yet still present enough to ring out loud and clear on all the tightly plucked notes – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann & The Afro-Jazz Sextet + Four Trumpets

Common Ground
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good
A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk

Brilliant Corners
Riverside, 1956. Near Mint-
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobbi Humphrey

Tailor Made
Epic, 1977. Very Good
Sure, it's after the Blue Note/Larry Mizell years – but Bobbi's still kicking ass! Instead of Larry Mizell, Bobbi's working with Skip Scarborough – and she's hitting a groove that's a bit smoother and more modern than before, but every bit as sweetly funky and seriously soulful. Bobbi ... LP, Vinyl record album
