Cost Of Loving

LP (Item 588222) Polydor, 1987 — Condition: Near Mint-

(Japanese pressing, with obi and insert.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Style Council

Our Favourite Shop
Polydor (UK), 1985. Near Mint- Gatefold
A blue-eyed soul classic from the UK scene of the 80s – probably the last truly great album from The Style Council, and a great blend of 60s influences with the post-Jam sound of Paul Weller. The album's got a bit more polish than before, but still none of the too-poppy modes that would mar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Ayers

Red Black & Green
Polydor, 1973. Very Good
Seminal early funk work from Roy Ayers! The record catches him at that perfect point when he was turning from a straight jazz player into a sinister force in 70s funk – and the group on the session includes super-hip soul jazz giants like Charles Tolliver, Sonny Fortune, and Harry Whitaker, ... Polydor, Early 70s. Very Good-
A nice one from Irene – a bit heavier on the soul tip than some of her earlier work, with strong arrangements by Horace Ott that have a slightly southern feel to them. The cut "The World Needs What I Need" is a great one – and other tracks include "Words", "A ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Ayers

Mystic Voyage
Polydor, 1975. Very Good
An archetypal album by Roy – and one that really shows him at the turning point of his sound! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first up-tempo funk ... Chakachas

Jungle Fever
Polydor, 1972. Near Mint-
A mad mix of Latin and funky rhythms – a 70s classic from the Belgian group Chakachas! The album's best known for its title hit "Jungle Fever" – an insane cut that features heavy drums, choppy guitar, and a stop/start action that's peppered with sounds of female pleasure! ... James Brown

Payback
Polydor, 1973. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1978. Very Good
A popping funky disco album cut decades before the French would be responsible for reviving the sound of classic disco. It's easy to see where the late 90s disco house revival in Paris got their inspiration on slamming drawn out club tracks like the classic "Jungle DJ" with everything ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wild Magnolias

Wayne Henderson

Living On A Dream
Polydor, 1978. Very Good
One of Wayne Henderson's best albums as an artist from the 70s – next to countless excellent work he handled as a producer! The set's got a gentle jazz funk groove overall – similar to Henderson's best At-Home productions for other groups, and performed with a host of great talents ... LP, Vinyl record album

Odetta

Odetta Sings
Polydor, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Quite different than the usual Odetta album – and a record that has the folk singer running through some hipper more modern numbers, often with a bit of a funky twist! Some tracks were recorded in Muscle Shoals with a small combo that includes Roger Hawkins, Eddie Hinton, and Jimmy Johnson ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1979. Very Good
Sublime work from Frankie Beverly and Maze – smooth, mellow, and perfectly put together, with a level of care and class that you'd be hard pressed to find in many of the group's contemporaries! The album's not one of the group's most famous, but that makes it even more of a treat, as you'll ... LP, Vinyl record album
