❔

(Japanese pressing, with obi and insert.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Isaac Hayes

New Horizon
Polydor, 1977. Very Good+
Great later work by Isaac Hayes – working here in a post-Stax, post-ABC mode that has him forging a smooth soul sound that's really great! The album's not disco, but more of an extension of Ike's baroque approach to arranging – with subtle use of strings and keyboards, in a real Philly ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Payback
Polydor, 1973. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wild Magnolias

Wild Magnolias
Polydor, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
Classic New Orleans funk featuring backing from the "New Orleans Project" that includes the Gaturs' Willie Tee, Earl Turbinton, and other Crescent City session stalwarts like Larry Panna and Julius Farmer. Includes lots of tracks that rocked the rare groove scene in the 80's, including ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Henderson

Living On A Dream
Polydor, 1978. Very Good
One of Wayne Henderson's best albums as an artist from the 70s – next to countless excellent work he handled as a producer! The set's got a gentle jazz funk groove overall – similar to Henderson's best At-Home productions for other groups, and performed with a host of great talents ... LP, Vinyl record album

Odetta

Odetta Sings
Polydor, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Quite different than the usual Odetta album – and a record that has the folk singer running through some hipper more modern numbers, often with a bit of a funky twist! Some tracks were recorded in Muscle Shoals with a small combo that includes Roger Hawkins, Eddie Hinton, and Jimmy Johnson ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Ayers

Fever
Polydor, 1979. Very Good
A great little album by Roy Ayers – one that features none of his hits, which means lots of fresh material – and which has great examples of both sides of Roy's talents at the time! The dancefloor side of Roy kicks in with "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", an extremely ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gloria Gaynor

Glorious
Polydor, 1977. Near Mint-
A great meeting of 70s disco talents here – as both Gregg Diamond and Joe Beck both work with Gloria Gaynor on this sweet little set – with an approach that makes for some of her nicest music of the time! Diamond's tunes have a definite Bionic Boogie feel – sharp-edged, but never ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Goodman & Brown

Ray, Goodman, & Brown
Polydor, 1979. Very Good
Sweet silky harmony soul from the trio of Harry Ray, Billy Brown, and Al Goodman – the group's first album under a new name – after some previous indie work as The Moments! The album's got the group really stepping up with a rich new sound – drawing on all the best elements of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dennis Coffey

Back Home
Westbound, 1977. Very Good+
Later Dennis Coffey, but still with some groovy tracks, even though the production's a bit smoother and a little faster than his early stuff. With "Funk Connection", "Back Home", and "Wings of Fire". The guitar's still out front, and the whole thing's written and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Betty Davis

Nasty-Gal
Island, 1975. Very Good
The biggest-label release ever cut by 70s funk legend Betty Davis – but a set that's every bit as hard and heavy as the indie dates that preceded it! Davis is at the top of her form here – bad-stepping amidst the heavy drums and freaked-out guitars that easily made her one of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
