Rescued – The Best Of Fontella Bass (Chess Collection pressing)

✈

Killer hard female soul! Fontella Bass was one of the best voices of the 60s – and she cut a lot of great work besides her one huge hit "Rescue Me" (which everyone always seems to think was by Aretha Franklin anyway!) This CD brings together 16 great tracks from her years at Chess, when she was brought to the label by Oliver Sain, who also handled most of the recordings. The sound here is pure and simple hard soul, with none of the more sophisticated stuff that Bass got into later, after hooking up with Lester Bowie. Titles include "Recovery", "The Soul Of A Man", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", "Don't Jump", "Leave It In The Hands Of Love", and "Joy Of Love". Also features a few duets with Bobby McClure, and a previously unissued track.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Best Of Louis Jordan
MCA, Mid 40s-Mid 50s/1975. Used
A great collection of Jordan's material from the mid 40s to the mid 50s – starting with his jazzy numbers of the earlier years, and moving into the more blues/rock 'n roll sound of later recordings. His band always sounds great and it also sounds like they're having a good time especially ... CD

MCA, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used
Groove-happy soul – a 14 track collection that brings together some of the best dancefloor numbers from Al Hudson's group One Way, plus a few solo tunes by one of its best singers, Alicia Myers! Hudson had a unique style that wasn't really disco, wasn't really funk – but took elements ... CD

Second Image

Strange Reflections
MCA/Finesse (UK), 1985. Used
A bit more mainstream than the first album from Second Image – but a set that still retains most of the group's charm! The best tracks here are sort of a laidback take on more forceful 80s groove modes – keyboards and basslines that snap nicely, but never go too far over the top – ... CD
Chess/Reel Music, 1973. Used
One of the deepest soul records ever issued by Chess Records – and the album wasn't even done in Chicago! The album's the only full effort issued under the name of Kim Tolliver – a singer who'd worked previously for Fantasy as Kimberley Briggs – and it's a sublime effort from ... CD
MCA/Vinyl Masterpiece (France), 1982. Used
