LP (Item 58718) Contemp/Inner City, 1977 — Condition: Very Good+

An icy set of tunes from Charlie – recorded in Germany with one of his electric 70s ensembles. Rainer Brunighaus plays a host of keyboards, Barre Phillips plays bass, and the album sports some tabla and percussion from Trilok Gurtu. The overall sound is pretty nice – tightly jamming fusion that occasionally waxes lyrical – and Charlie's in prime form chopping up those reed solos on soprano, alto, and flute. Titles include "Back Of J", "7 Up", "To An Elfin Princess", "Aszu", "Out Of The Jungle", and "Earth".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a lightly bent corner.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Regina, 1963. Sealed
A beautiful little record that's one of the toughest to find by Charlie Mariano, and which represents a rare "with orchestra" session that was put together by a young Don Sebesky! The backing's got all the moody overtones that show up in Sebesky's best arranging, and the group includes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hannibal In Antibes
Inner City, 1977. Very Good+

Cecil Taylor

Dark To Themselves
Inner City, 1976. Very Good+
One of Cecil Taylor's most spiritual sessions of the 70s – a live set recorded in Yugoslavia in 1976, and done with this really open sound, but one that comes as much from the horns as it does from Cecil's piano! In fact, we might well say that the horns are the best attraction here – ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Friedman

Futures Passed
Inner City, 1976. Sealed
One of the coolest, grooviest albums we've ever heard from vibist Dave Friedman – a set that really lives up to the promise we sometimes expect from other records of his, but never find this clearly! Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers

Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Epic)
Epic, Late 50s. Very Good+
Art Blakey's soundtrack to this fantastic French film is one of his best non-Blue Note albums ever – and it's got the additional bonus of featuring performances by the great French tenor star Barney Wilen!
