We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

MCA, 1981. Near Mint-
Great 80s work from Heat – a trio who definitely work primarily in soul, but who also aren't afraid of a catchy crossover hook either! There's a groove here that's smooth, but still nice and lean – really just the efforts of producer/instrumentalist Tom Saviano, who also arranged the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mirwood, 1967. Very Good-
A northern soul classic! Jackie's the same guy as Earl from Bob & Earl, and combined with his excellent work in that duo, he's one heck of a big force in underground 60s soul! His hard groover "The Duck" has always been a favorite on soul dancefloors around the world, and it's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Enterprise, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP
Baroquely beautiful work from the Stax soul master – one of Isaac Hayes' heaviest albums of the 70s – and a record so massive, they needed 2LPs to contain the whole thing! The record's a culmination of the rich, full style of soulful arranging that Hayes had pioneered in his early solo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Let's Do It
Polydor, 1978. Very Good+
Pure magic from the height of Roy Ayers' classic 70s run on Polydor – a record that's filled with warm, jazzy grooves – all served up in that unique style that Roy was forging at the time! The album perfectly balances dancefloor tracks with mellower numbers – stepping out one ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Atmosphere
Specialty, Late 50s. Very Good
Great Dizzy big band LP from the late 50's, with a stellar lineup that includes a young Lee Morgan on trumpet, Billy Mitchell on tenor, and the underrecorded Billy Root on baritone. The band swings hard, and the playing's great both in the ensemble moments and in the solos. Tracks include "DD ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maiden Voyage
Cadet, 1968. Very Good-
One of the key records from the Cadet/Concept scene in late 60s Chicago – a tremendous collaboration between pianist Ramsey Lewis and arranger Charles Stepney – and the kind of record that took soul and jazz to a whole new level! Ramsey on his own is great enough at this point – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stylings Of Silver
Blue Note, 1957. Very Good
A great Horace Silver album – and one of the rarest! The record features some top-line material that virtually defines Silver's post-Jazz Messengers sound – tracks that come out with a hard and heavy groove, yet which also have a lightness in the mix too – a sense of play and ... Mother Nature's Son
Cadet, 1968. Very Good-
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums of all time – an incredible reworking of tunes by The Beatles, done in collaboration with Cadet Records studio maestro Charles Stepney – who brings in some amazing arrangements and production styles to the record! The tunes are familiar, but the ... LP, Vinyl record album
