Best Of The Fabulous Three

CD (Item 586274) Truth & Soul, 2000s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

CD

✈
East coast instrumental funk players working together as Fabulous Three – Leon Michels, Jeff Dynamite, Quincy Bright, Homer Steinweiss, Phillip Lehman, Michael Leonhart and others from the Truth & Soul team – with a sound that's a blend of gritty raw funk, hazier psych soul instrumentals and other evergreen modes! The Best Of The Fabulous Three is a somewhat mysterious, though definitely fabulous set with some material that dates back to the Soul Fire 45 days, pre-Truth & Soul that deserves to be anthologized – and other stuff that's just as great, but we had never heard before now! The cover photo shows what might just be a lost funk group – but this music is played by modern masters who at this point can comfortably be called a supergroup. Brilliant stuff! Titles include the classic Soul Fire 45 cut "Answer Me Softly" (Pts 1 & 2), plus "Nightbird", "Whitesands" (Pts 1 & 2), "Sweetback", "No Name Bar", "Pep's", "Hand Cramp", "Fly By End", "Odyssey Revised"  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Jackson Conti (Madlib & Mamao)

Sujinho
Madlib Invazion, 2008. Used
Great grooves from Jackson Conti – not a dude, but a duo – one that features Madlib teamed with Mamao, drummer from the legendary Azymuth! The album's got a really unique feel – one that mixes Madlib's chunky, fuzzy style of production with some of the cleaner, jazzier Azymuth ... CD

Stanton Moore

Flyin' The Koop
Blue Thumb, 2002. Used
Tight funky grooves from the jamband underground – one of the strongest albums of this type to come out in years! Stanton Moore's at the head of a small all-star combo that includes Skerik and Karl Denson on sax, Brian Seeger on guitar, and Chris Wood on bass – and Stanton's work on ... CD

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

Soul Time
Daptone, 2011. Used
Damn damn damn – maybe the funkiest album ever from Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings! The group have always been great, but there's something here that goes even farther than usual – an especially funky snap on the drums at the bottom, even on more laidback tunes – and a stone ... CD
Boston Horns, 2004. Used
The title's a great one – as The Boston Horns have definitely found their own groove – a super-tight approach to funk, but one that's never slick at all! These guys have the sort of sharpness you might find in an older soul instrumental combo – but they also bring a touch of jazz ... CD

Now Again/Stones Throw, 2016. Used
Not the original Quatermass EP from The Heliocentrics – but material that takes off in an even fuller, heavier direction – and which may well be the funkiest sounds we've heard from these guys so far! The music is stunning right from the very first heavy bassline and sharp drum crackle ... CD

Heliocentrics

13 Degrees Of Reality
Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. Used
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at ... CD

Pimps Of Joytime

Funk Fixes & Remixes
Wonderwheel, 2009. Used
Brooklyn funky soul combo Pimps Of Joytime – whose eclectic grooves roll in and out of Latin stoked grooves, laidback and feverish funk, and hip hop – a few new original numbers plus some remixes by DJ Vadim, Chico Mann, Nickodemus, Chico Mann and SUMO! Titles include "Bonita" ... CD

Cochemea

All My Relations
Daptone, 2019. Used
You might know Cochemea Gastelum from his work in The Dap-Kings over the years – but this time around, the saxophonist is very much his own man – blowing a version of his instruments that often seems electrified, ala classic Varitone from the late 60s – used in these really new ... CD
