Black Drops (alternate cover)

LP (Item 585288) Prestige, 1970 — Condition: Very Good
A monster – and Charles Earland's second album for Prestige, the follow-up to his groundbreaking Black Talk album! This set's as great as that classic set – a tight batch of groovers that features Earland's Hammond work right out front, grooving away in a soaring, exploratory style that blew away most other jazz organ players at the time. Here, Earland's got an amazing talent for really stretching out, yet never losing the groove – infusing tunes with incredible soulfulness, and making them dance out nicely, even at the farthest reaches of his solos. The band's great, too – with Maynard Parker on guitar, Jimmy Heath on tenor and soprano, and Virgil Jones on trumpet – and all tracks are great, with titles that include "Sing A Simple Song", "Lazy Bird", "Letha", "Buck Green", and a great cover of "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head"!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Purple label pressing. Cover has some splitting, some surface wear, light stain spots on the back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charles Earland

Living Black
Prestige, 1970. Very Good
A stone cold live date from Charles Earland – recorded in Newark, at just the sort of club where he got his start! The tracks are quite long and openly grooving – even more so than Charles' killer studio sets from the time – and there's a bit of a harder edge here too, thanks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige/OJC, 1950s/1960s/1970s. Near Mint-
Includes selections by Barney Kessell, Eddie Duran, Tiny Grimes, Wes Montgomery, Billy Bean, Pat Martino, Tal Farlow, Jim Hall, and Herb Ellis. LP, Vinyl record album

Barry Harris Sextet

Bull's Eye!
Prestige, 1968. Very Good
A sock-hard set of Detroit soul jazz that's one of Barry Harris' best albums of the 60s! The group on the record is a sextet – with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Charles McPherson on tenor, and Pepper Adams on baritone – forging a much harder frontline than you'll hear on some of Barry's ... Richard Groove Holmes

Spicy
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+
Plenty of groove, and plenty of spice – a set that has the heavy Holmes taking off in his best 60s soul jazz formation! The tracks are extremely tight – a bit shorter than usual, but in a really good way – almost to show that Grove Holmes could pack plenty of niceness into a tune ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons & James Moody

Chicago Concert
Prestige, 1971. Very Good+
Late great work from Ammons – an album done at the time of his funk sides for Prestige, but recorded in the style of his earlier years in Chicago! The session's a laidback set of soulful solo-heavy work – recorded as part of a hip series of shows at the North Park Hotel, with a local ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

Primitivo Soul
Prestige, Early 60s. Very Good+
A really great session from Sonny Stitt – and one with a slightly different vibe than usual! That vibe comes from the work of two Latin percussionists – Marcelino Valdez on congas and Osvaldo Martinez on bongos – both of whom really a a lot to the groove next to the drums of ... Arnett Cobb

Go Power!!!
Prestige, Early 60s/1970. Very Good
1970 repackaging of Cobb's classic Blow, Arnett, Blow album from the early 60's. Cobb's playing here with Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, and the 2 horn frontline's backed by Wild Bill Davis on organ, plus bass and drums. Tracks include "The Fluke", "The Eely One", "Go ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Bahia
Prestige, Late 50s. Near Mint-
An album issued in the years after John Coltrane left the Prestige Records label – but a set that includes some very compelling sounds from the early years, really showing the tenorist in a strongly spiritual transition! Coltrane plays tenor throughout, and the record also features the Red ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt with Jack McDuff

Soul Summit
Prestige, 1962. Very Good+
A definite soul summit for the time – with 3 top-shelf players in the lead, all getting plenty of room to do their thing! Both Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt are on tenor in the front, working with the respect and confidence they'd forged together on other co-led sessions from the time – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Django
Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good-
A stone classic from the Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded back when the group still featured Kenny Clarke in its membership, but already with some of the more serious, somber tones that would mark the combo's more famous years! Tracks here are from a variety of sessions in 1953, 1954, and 1955 ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
A real classic from the 60s soul jazz years at Prestige Records – an album of work by some of the label's best talents of the late 50s and early 60s, all edited down to shorter 45-type takes! There's a fair number of tracks on each side – but the work is all great enough to warrant the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ron Carter

Yellow & Green
CTI, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
A landmark album from the great Ron Carter – one of those key 70s sides where he was able to show the world that he was way more than just a jazz bassist – and instead a sophisticated musical genius with so much to offer! Ron's bass is certainly a key part of the set – he plays ... LP, Vinyl record album
