Spring Leaves (Portrait In Jazz/Explorations)

LP (Item 58524) Milestone, 1959/1961 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold

A 70s two-fer that brings together 2 of Evans' wonderful albums recorded with the trio of drummer Paul Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro. The records are augmented by a few extra tracks not issued originally, and a great set of notes that aptly describes the magic of this rare group. Titles include "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "When I Fall In Love", "Autumn Leaves", "Haunted Heart", "Elsa", and "Israel".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(French pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1964. Very Good+
Warmly wonderful live work from Bill Evans' mid 60s run for Verve – a record that was originally recorded in 1964, but sat in the can until the early 70s – then just quietly issued on the market with a bit less fanfare! That somewhat subtle history shouldn't mark the album, though ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside/Milestone, 1958/1959/1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice Milestone 2-fer collected and remastered in 1975, of the Riverside LP Everybody Digs Bill Evans, an unreleased trio side and one outtake from the Interplay sessions. The first set finds Bill in his typical piano trio setting, joined by Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones, but has several of his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans

Interplay Sessions
Riverside/Milestone, 1962/1982. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The core session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans

Portrait In Jazz
Riverside, 1959. Sealed
A classic set to feature the Bill Evans Trio with the great Scott Lafaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums! Listening to the set we're reminded of what always brings us back to Evans' playing – a quality that's often described as moody, but which is really is quite spry and lively throughout ... Verve, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
Ostensibly simple stuff from Bill Evans, but pretty darn great – and a nice move into a more sophisticated vein than his earlier recordings! Milestone compiled this album of some of the tracks Monk and Coltrane recorded together when their union began in the late 50s. One of those ubiquitous Milestone 70s two-fers combining two nice sides from the little giant. Mike Wofford

Summer Night
Milestone, 1967. Near Mint-
Early work by genius pianist Mike Wofford – moody and introspective, clearly inspired by Bill Evans, but also with an open feel that really sets the pace for changes in 70s jazz piano. The group on the set is a trio – with Monty Budwig on bass and John Guerin on drums – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milestone, 1974. Very Good+
Quite hip stuff from McTyner – really righteous sounds from his 70s run for Milestone Records, recorded with a great lineup that includes Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Gary Bartz on alto, Azar Lawrence on soprano and tenor sax, Bulster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on ... Two excellent early 60s sides from Bags, both casting him in a larger setting than the smaller, tighter ensembles he typically worked in.
