We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Peabo
Bullet, 1976. Very Good
Early work by Peabo – smooth soul with a sophisticated feel, but not as stiff and stodgy as his later work, which could sometimes verge on the adult contemporary side. Peabo's voice has an honest soulful quality, and the album's got arrangements by Gene Page that move along nicely – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fire On Ice
Elektra, 1978. Very Good-
One of the great albums from Terry Callier's "second chapter" on record – a time when he was working for Elektra Records, and doing work that was a bit straighter soul than before – and also slightly jazzy as well! The record's kind of a mix of jazzy grooves and smoother soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
Elektra, 1981. Very Good+
A wonderful debut full length from Mighty Fire – a group whose roots lead back to lots of previous work for Motown, and as The Flakes – stepping out here as a tight quintet with a wonderfully focused sound! Despite the 80s date of the record, the sound feels like the best combo funky ... LP, Vinyl record album
Shirley Murdock
Elektra, 1985. Very Good+
Songs include "Be Free", "No More", "Go On Without You", "Danger Zone", "Teaser", and "The One I Need". LP, Vinyl record album
Liquid Gold
Parachute/Casablanca, 1979. Sealed
These guys were ostensibly more of a throwaway disco act than anything else – with a silly name, strange costumes, and trashy white boy disco look – but despite all that, there's a pretty nice track on this album! The set kicks off with the extended groover "C'Mon & Dance" ... LP, Vinyl record album
1999
Warner, 1982. Near Mint- 2LP
Here begins the period that Prince went from a fascinating, genre defying hitmaker to an unstoppable cultural force – bringing a bit of a new wave pop punch to the funky synth soul – and somehow crafting some of the most irresistible singles of the 80s! We can't imagine anyone being ... LP, Vinyl record album
Portraits
Elektra, 1981. Near Mint-
Wonderful work from Side Effect – a sweet little record that really has the group changing things up nicely from their Fantasy years! Production is still by Augie Johnson, and has a really strong Wayne Henderson/At-Home Productions vibe – lots of jazz in the mix, which warm things up ... LP, Vinyl record album
A&M, 1978. Very Good-
Jeffrey Osborne's really emerging strongly here in the mellow soul mode – especially on the album's two great ballad cuts, "Concentrate On You" and "We Both Deserve Each Other", both of which are smooth mellow steppers with a modern soul approach that's slightly less ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hot Property
Epic, 1979. Very Good
Man, these guys never seem to miss – and always come up with some great little tunes that snap along in a really compelling way! This album might be easy to overlook in favor of the band's bigger classics, but it's a stone winner all the way through – with a number of tunes that groove ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sweets For My Sweet
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
Wonderful soul by one of the best female groups of the 60s! The Sweet Inspirations work here in a southern-tinged style similar to their classic backing work for Aretha Franklin – a sound that was already great behind Aretha, but which is even better here on its own – warm, spiritual, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pipas, Early 70s. Sealed
Very obscure LP by what seems to be a lost Chicano funk group from Chicago. Released by the small Pipas label on the south side, the LP includes a nice cover of "Funky Nassau", plus covers of "Do Me Right", "Simple Song", and "Them Changes". The LP also ... LP, Vinyl record album
Please Please Please
King, 1959. Very Good
An incredible early album from James Brown – featuring 16 raw R&B tracks culled from his early years at King – and virtually the blueprint for so many other great things to follow! "Please Please Please" was James' first big hit – and as you probably already know, ... LP, Vinyl record album
