Chance

LP (Item 58389) Warner, 1979 — Condition: Very Good+
Heavy grooves from the club years of Candi Staton – material that's quite different than the rootsier soul of her start, but work that's equally great in its own sort of way! The tunes here are mostly upbeat and clubby – with arrangements handled by Patrick Adams, Leon Pendarvis, Ron Miller, Kenny Morris, and others – all much more east coast and uptempo than the southern-styled sound of Staton's previous records. Yet Candi still sounds great throughout – and her well-trained vocals really hold strong throughout the set, following nicely on the previous strengths of the "Young Hearts" hit. Most tracks are long, and titles include "I Ain't Got Nowhere To Go", "When You Wake Up Tomorrow", "Rock", "Chance", and "Me & My Music".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Candi Staton

Sing A Sing
Beracah, 1986. Near Mint-
(Cover has light wear and bent corners.) LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1977. Very Good+
A lost bit of mid 70s soul from Candi – an album that's often eclipsed by the Young Hearts hit before it, but which actually comes across stronger than that one! The groove is funky southern soul on the best cuts – tight and full, but still with a harder edge on the bottom, and rhythms ... LP, Vinyl record album

Candi Staton

Stand By Your Man
Fame, Late 60s. Very Good+
Wonderful early work from deep soul singer Candi Staton – early southern work, and done with a very different vibe than the clubbier cuts she'd deliver at the end of the 70s! Fame Records giant Rick Hall produced, and the whole thing was recorded with the kind of raw hard sound that Muscle ... LP, Vinyl record album

Candi Staton

House Of Love
Warner, 1978. Very Good+
A perfect pairing of Candi Staton and producer Dave Crawford – that key southern soul talent who helped Candi and a few select others really step into the American soul mainstream at the end of the 70s! Candi's still got all the deep roots in her vocals – including that incredible ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

Smooth Sailin'
Warner, 1987. Very Good+
Classic 80s work from the Isley Brothers – a set that has the duo of Ronald and Rudolph getting some great help in the studio from Angela Winbush! Angela helped produce the record, and she also wrote many of the songs – and she plays keyboards on the set too, giving the tracks the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Vanity 6

Vanity 6
Warner, 1982. Very Good
The only record from this group that would sort of morph into Apollonia 6, one of many Prince vehicles during the 80s. As you'd hope from a Prince side project, the tracks here bubble with his new wave/pop/funk crossover, though really the hit "Nasty Girl" is pretty much the only ... LP, Vinyl record album

LaBelle

LaBelle
Warner, 1971. Very Good
A real breakthrough in female soul for the 70s – the initial album from Labelle – a set that's very different material than the group were doing on their girl group singles in the 60s! The trio here is legendary – Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – three ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prince

Prince
Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! This self-titled album is Prince's second album, and already his vision is becoming a little more focused, and you can really hear the seeds of his later efforts – a really remarkable, unique, and fascinating ... Mike Theodore Orchestra

Cosmic Wind
Westbound/Warner, 1977. Very Good+
Mike's come a long way from his early soul days with Dennis Coffey – working here to lay down a set of spacious disco tunes with a dreamy finish – really stretching out with the same sort of glide you'd find in the best Philly club at the time! The record's actually quite strong on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Graham Central Station

Mirror
Warner, 1976. Near Mint-
Larry Graham and crew are definitely going for a fuller sound on this set – starting off the record with a funky marching band, in Tusk-like fashion – then rolling into some bass-heavy funk that tops even their previous records for tightness! The groove is a key element in the growth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Randy Crawford

Now We May Begin
Warner, 1980. Very Good+
A great little album cut by Randy during the height of her career! She'd just broken big with her vocals on "Street Life" by the Crusaders – and although that track's not on here, the Crusaders team of Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, and Joe Sample produced the album, and have given it ... Chaka Khan

Chaka
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
The very first solo album from Chaka Khan – recorded after a great 70s run in Rufus, and an instant-classic that showed the world that she might be an even more amazing artist on her own! All those fantastic vocals from the previous albums with Rufus seem to get even more center stage action ... LP, Vinyl record album
