Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jaki Byard

Family Man
Muse, 1978. Very Good+
Jaki Byard brings plenty to the table here – playing both tenor and alto sax, in addition to his usual piano – and showing once again that he's not just a multi-instrumentalist, but also one of the most multi-voiced talents in jazz! Byard seems to bring a similar spirit of multiplicity ... LP, Vinyl record album

Muse, 1982. Very Good+
One of Ford's extremely strong albums from the early 80s – a soulful expression of hardbop, recorded at a time when albums like this were an extremely rare breed! Hollywood Madness
Muse, 1980. Near Mint-
A great example of the Muse Records charm of altoist Richie Cole – bop-fired creativity at its peak, mixed with some added contemporary elements to keep things fresh! Willis Jackson

Ya Understand Me?
Muse, 1984. Near Mint-
Back to basics work from Willis Jackson – a live date recorded in France at the start of the 80s, but one that's done with a soul jazz vibe that recalls his 60s concert sets for Prestige! The group here is a quartet, with Richard Groove Holmes on Hammond – and the tracks are long and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Richie Cole

Alto Madness
Muse, 1977. Near Mint-
Nothing too mad here, but a wonderful record that really shows the genius of Richie Cole in the 70s! Cole on Muse is a wonderful combination – sharp-edged alto sax, rooted in tradition – but let loose on some freer soul jazz modes as well, really showing the strong jazz underground ... Very nice 2LP set that collects some of Herbie's best 60s work for Blue Note – and which moves past the hits to feature some nice gems from hard to find albums.
