Soul Years – 1948 to 1973 – Atlantic Records 25th Anniversary

LP (Item 582615) Atlantic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s/Early 70s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
Not just soul, but lots of R&B too – work by Betty Wright, Joe Turner, Joe Tex, Sam & Dave, Stick McGhee, Ray Charles, The Drifters, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, The Chords, Solomon Burke, and lots of others!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rockefeller label pressing with Warner rim logo in the fold-out cover, with ring and edge wear, half split spine, some price sticker remnants, and small blemishes in back.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Young-Holt Unlimited

Oh Girl
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
Wicked electric funk from Young Holt Unlimited – and a real departure from the sound of their 60s albums, and a step into a groove that's very 70s-styled overall! The album's heavy on Fender Rhodes – played not just by group member Ken Chaney, but also by a young Bobby Lyle – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Carne

You're A Part Of Me
Atlantic, 1988. Very Good+
By this point in her career, Jean Carn's added an "e" to her name, has messed up her hair, and picked up a pronounced 80s smooth soul sound. However, she's still recording in Philly, and on the best cuts she makes it past some rather heavy keyboard arrangements that almost get in the way. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Percy Sledge

Best Of Percy Sledge
Atlantic, Late 60s. Very Good+

Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
While this is the sort of collection labels churn out as a loss leader, to spark interest in their artists, this set actually shows off the depth of talent in the Atlantic catalog throughout the 60s. Mostly soul and R&B, but with a few pop numbers too, the twelve song set plays great as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spinners

New & Improved
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+
A great batch of sophisticated soul tracks, with sweet Philly arrangements by Thom Bell, and nice studio work by the usual suspects. Live & More
Atlantic, 1980. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A double album from Roberta & Peabo – with some nicely recorded tracks from a gig at The Holiday Star Theater in Merrillville, IN (not too far south of Chicago) in the dawn of the 80s – and some tight studio material, too! Brute Force

Brute Force
Embryo, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
The one and only album by this righteous funky combo from Ohio! Although Brute Force were an American group of the late 60s, they've got a sound that brings in traces of the African rhythms that were bubbling under at the time – similar to some of the best London groups of the post-colonial ... Something About You
Arista, 1981. Near Mint-
A soaring classic from Angie Bofil – a record that stands as one of the most perfect demonstrations of her upbeat, positive approach to soul!
