Indestructible

LP (Item 582119) Arista, 1988 — Condition: Near Mint-
Indestructible sounds from The Four Tops – a set that still has the legendary quartet going strong! The production and arrangements definitely show a late 80s Arista Records touch, with a fair bit of keyboards and electric rhythms – but the core sound of the group is still very firmly in place – those amazing vocals of Levi Stubbs, Duk Fakir, Lawrence Payton, and Obie Benson – soaring out at a level that still tops the singing chops of all the younger groups of the time. Production is by a fair number of big names – including Narada Michael Walden, Jerry Knight, and Albert Hammond – as well as Phil Collins and Huey Lewis, who are clearly going for more of a crossover appeal for the group. Yet even the slick spots can't dim the strength of the vocals – on titles that include "Change Of Heart", "I'm Only Wounded", "Loco In Acapulco", "When You Dance", "Let's Jam", and "If Ever A Love There Was".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Motown, 1960s. Near Mint-
Given how much you hear this sort of stuff on the radio, you could easily forget that the Four Tops are actually a heck of a great vocal group, with harmonies that blew away many of their contemporaries, and which keep their work shining long past the hits. This second volume of hits has 12 tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kashif (1983)
Arista, 1983. Very Good+
A monumental bit of 80s soul – the first solo album from Kashif, issued hot on the heels of a few years spent penning and producing work for a range of bigger artists! Get It Right
Arista, 1983. Near Mint-
A real standout from Aretha Franklin's years on Arista – a set produced by Luther Vandross, with a soaring groove that really opens Aretha up nicely! No Night So Long
Arista, 1980. Near Mint-
A key album in Dionne Warwick's career revival at Arista Records – a set that's filled with the kind of fuller sounds and maturing modes that worked quite well for her shifts in styles over the years! Funk In A Mason Jar
Arista, 1977. Very Good+
Smooth soulful jazz from Harvey Mason – one of his strong 70s winners for the Arista album, and a record that really brings a new level of class to his sound! Groovin' You
Arista, 1979. Very Good
One of the best solo records from Harvey Mason – best known as the drummer on some really monster 70s funky fusion sessions (such as Johnny Hammond's Gears album) – but a surprisingly well-rounded R&B artist overall! Arista, 1980. Near Mint-
Classy later soul from Aretha Franklin – a set that's free from some of the too-commercial modes of other 80s work, but which still pushes the envelope nicely from her years at Atlantic!
