Although bassist Sam Jones graced some of the best hard bop and soul jazz sessions of the early 60's, he made darn few records as a leader, which is a shame, because he's got a real talent for making a group groove, and for bringing his funky bass out front in a session. This record's got him with a larger group arranged and conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and then in some smaller quartet sessions with Les Spann on flute and Joe Zawinul on piano. The whole thing grooves nicely in both settings, and with a full list of players that includes Frank Strozier, Blue Mitchell, Pat Patrick, and Jimmy Heath, you can imagine the soulful hip kind of groove the record has.
