An African Party indeed – recorded in London at the end of the 60s, and featuring a blistering array of percussion and jazz-based influences! Ginger Johnson got his start on the London scene playing a mix of jazz and Latin rhythms in bigger groups, but broke out on his own in the mid 60s to form the super-hip African Messengers – a group intended to take the music back to its roots, but which still had a keen ear for some of the jazzier sounds of post-colonial London. This 1967 session has a great mix of modes that's a bit like some of Art Blakey's percussion experiments for Blue Note – lots of drums and percussion instruments at the bottom, touched by a bit of sax, flute, and trumpet solo work on the top! There's a really firey energy to the entire album, and titles include "Adura", "Ire", "Talking Drum", "Lord Morocco", "Alege", "Watusi", and "Hi Life".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Club Sodade

Lovely stuff! The work of singer Cesara Evoria is remixed by a host of modern club talents – no surprise, as her best tracks of the past few years have been getting plenty of action on the 12" front – taking her from the world music scene into the clubs, with very surprising ... CD

Teddi King

Now In Vogue
Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1955. Used
One of a number of great small group sessions done by singer Teddi King for the Storyville label – nicely relaxed, with backing from a septet that features Billy Taylor on piano, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Nick Travis on trumpet, and Gene Quill on alto! The Storyville approach really brings ... CD
Warner (Brazil), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used
The title might make this sound like a completists "best of" of work by Elis Regina, but it's actually a pretty good selection of tracks from the last years of her life, when she was recording for Elektra in Brazil, and working in a style that mixed her jazzy roots with more modern styles ...
