Swingin' With Bud

LP (Item 57954) RCA, 1957 — Condition: Near Mint-
One of the few Bud Powell sessions cut for RCA, but a brilliantly swinging date that has the pianist working at the height of his powers! There's an edge here that comes through right from the start – an off kilter vibe in both Bud's tone, and even in the way he's vocalizing joyously in the background at a few spots – not singing, but exclaiming – at a level that really helps you feel how much he owns the piano while he's performing! Dark pockets and sharp angles pervade – while still swinging right down the middle – balanced off perfectly with work from Art Taylor on drums and George Duvivier on bass. Tremendous all the way through – and different than Bud's work for Verve and Blue Note – in a really compelling way. Titles include "Another Dozen", "Like Someone In Love", "She", "Oblivion", "Swedish Pastry", and "Birdland Blues".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has peeling in ring-form in front, mostly in the center, some yellowing from age and small bit of red pen in back, and small split in the bottom seam.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA (France), 1956/1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Strictly Bud Powell, in the best sense of the word – as the album's a sharp batch of trio tracks recorded for RCA in the 50s, and a great showcase for Bud's firey talents on the piano! The rhythm combo features bold work on drums from Art Taylor, alongside the bass of George Duvivier – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1962. Near Mint-
A lost European performance from Bud Powell – recorded in Stockholm relatively late in his life, but on some nicely long tracks that really let Powell stretch out on the piano! There's a nice degree of echo in the recording – and we mean that not as a cover up for poor sound quality, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good+
A great little record, and one that shows just why Blue Note chose to put "amazing" in the title of every Bud Powell album they released! The set's a live one, done at Birdland – and Bud's working here with a trio that features the young Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint-
One of the few rare non-trio recordings done by Powell from around this time. He plays with a trio (Paul Chambers bass, Art Taylor drums) on the whole first side of the record, but the group's then joined by Curtis Fuller for all of side 2. Fuller's deep trombone makes for a different twist, and a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1954/1955/1956. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Very strong 2LP set that brings together Powell's last 5 sessions for Verve – haunting work recorded before a departure to Paris, and some of the most fascinating recordings of Powell's jagged career. The sides are quite tough to find on vinyl, and they're packaged here with the benefit of a ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, Early 40s. Near Mint-
Very early work from the great Billy Eckstine – singing vocals here with a group led by pianist Earl Hines, before he later broke out with his own famous ensemble. All material is from the 78rpm generation, presented here on vinyl for the first time. LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1958. Very Good
Short tight ensemble jazz tracks, very much in a LA style from the initial post-cool years – set to tunes written by the legendary Harry Warren. The group includes Pell, Jack Sheldon, Bob Enevoldsen, Paul Moer, and Mel Lewis – and tracks include "Lulu's Back In Town", "Ja ... LP, Vinyl record album

A double-length, ultra-cool set from saxophonist Phil Woods – yet another aspect of his great body of work from the 70s, and a live date that features Woods at the head of a sextet! RCA, 1947. Very Good
A famous mid 40s performance – material from a 1947 show at New York's Town Hall – mixed with other tracks from around the same time! Arguably one of the greatest albums that Shorty Rogers ever cut – and one of the few to feature him in a small group setting!
