I'm Ready

LP (Item 579470) Epic, 1983 — Condition: Very Good+
A great re-launch for the sound of Natalie Cole in the 80s – an album that represents a shift from Capitol Records to Epic, but which also still features work from Cole's best collaborators – the soulful team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy! The Chicago duo help out on most of the best tracks here – and revamp the Cole sound of the 70s with a style that's a bit leaner, and more suited to 80s soul arrangements – but which also still has a fullness that suits Natalie best! Instrumentation is never too electric or stiff, and there's a nice use of strings – in a subtle way that's never too dated, but which underscores the classier elements in Cole's approach. Stanley Clarke produced a bit on the set, too – and titles include "Too Much Mister", "I Won't Deny You", "Where's Your Angel", "I'm Your Mirror", "Straight From The Heart", "Keep It On The Outside", and "Time Heals All Wounds".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wild Cherry

Electrified Funk
Epic/Sweet City, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
It's a year after Wild Cherry's big hit, but the group are still very much in similar territory – working the bass with a heavy crossover dancefloor appeal – and serving up tunes that are compressed perfectly for the AM airwaves! There's a clear nod here to the sunshine sound of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Jackson

Thriller
Epic, 1982. Near Mint- Gatefold
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jacksons

Victory
Epic, 1984. Near Mint- Gatefold
Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nona Hendryx

Nona Hendryx
Epic, 1977. Very Good+
Post-Labelle solo work from Nona Hendryx – and a set that very much shows that she's the one who brought all the raw funky power to the group! Unlike Patti Labelle's work from the same time, which was getting smoother and classier, Nona's work here is almost in the vein of rock music – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Staple Singers

Pray On
Epic, Mid 60s. Very Good
Rootsy material recorded for Epic in the 60s, before the group went over to Stax and started cutting secular soul! These sides are much more in a traditional gospel quartet mode – but the group's powerful vocals and strongly soulful approach makes the tracks rock with the strength of some of ... Teena Marie

Starchild
Epic, 1984. Near Mint-
A stunning solo effort – Teena's second on Epic, and proof that she could still put out the goods on her own! Don't worry about the absence of Rick James here – as things are mighty tight, and right on the money – that wicked blend of funk and soul that got Lady T a great start ... LP, Vinyl record album

Okeh/Epic, Mid 50s/1982. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Essential 2LP set of rare R&B material from the legendary Okeh label – known to many as one of the 50's best labels for the genre! Sure, you'll find a few hits on here – like Screamin Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On Your" – but the real nice bits are the obscurer ... LP, Vinyl record album

Melba Moore

Melba (Epic)
Epic/CBS, 1978. Near Mint-

Cameo

Secret Omen
Chocolate City, 1979. Very Good+
A sweet stunner from Cameo – a set that's got the group working with an even tighter, more on the money sound than before – yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial! These guys were one of the first to push the big ensemble funk sound into a leaner approach, and they really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shaft
Enterprise, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
