❔

A collection of 60s recordings for Atlantic, starting in 1965 with Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums, and later in 1967 with Jodie Christian on piano, Melvin Jackson on bass, Richard Smith on drums, and Ray Barretto on percussion, and a 1968 date with Heywood Henry on baritone, Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Charles Rainey on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. Titles include "Listen Here", "Theme In Search Of A Movie", "Freedom Jazz Dance", "Live Right Now", "Love Theme From The Sandpiper", "and "Movin' On Out".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Green and red Broadway label stereo pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eddie Harris

I'm Tired Of Driving
RCA, 1978. Near Mint-
Less of a jazz album than some of Eddie's other records – but that's ok with us! As a soul album, the record's actually pretty darn great – arranged and produced by Richard Evans with a late Chicago soul approach that has Eddie's funky sax stepping amidst some larger orchestrations and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence Wheeler

New Chicago Blues
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
No blues at all – despite the title – and a great set of tracks that showcases the southside Chicago tenor roots of Clarence Wheeler! The album's a bit different than the first two Wheeler albums for Atlantic – in that the group's slightly bigger, and more 70s electric overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Zawinul

Concerto Retitled
Atlantic, Late 60s/1976. Very Good+
Early recordings by Joe Zawinul as a leader – mostly tracks from the 60s, but issued by Atlantic in the mid 70s to work off Joe's growing fame in Weather Report! The set's got a sound that's a fair bit different than some of the more dynamic work that Joe was doing in the 70s – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lionel Hampton

Sentimental Journey
Atlantic, 1986. Near Mint-
Lionel Hampton plays vibes and synth with vocals from Sylvia Bennett. Tracks include "Lady Is A Tramp", "Avalon", and "It Don't Mean A Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence Wheeler & The Enforcers

Doin' What We Wanna
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good
A landmark album from this legendary Chicago soul jazz combo – and a record that helped set the tone for changes to come in funky jazz for the 70s! Tenorist Clarence Wheeler heads up the group – and they've got an amazing organ/bass sound that's made them a legend with funk fans for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Modes

Jazz Modes
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
One of the rarest albums by this fantastic combo from the late 50s! The band features the very strange mix of French horn, tenor, and soulful piano – played by Julius Watkins, Charlie Rouse, and Gildo Mahones, respectively. The sound shouldn't work, but it does, and beautifully – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Barbarin & His Jazz Band/Punch Miller's Bunch

Jazz At Preservation Hall 3
Atlantic, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A real cooker in the Atlantic Records' 60s series from Preservation Hall – a record that definitely keeps up the groove throughout! Side one features work by the combo of drummer Paul Barbarin – a lively player with a romping approach to rhythm – one that perfectly suits the trad ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Fontessa
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good
A classic set of high-class jazz from the MJQ – one that shows John Lewis' growing compositional skills, and the band's always tight ability to work in a compressed chamber format. Features the extended "Fontessa" suite, plus the tracks "Versailles", "Angel Eyes" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hubert Laws

Laws Of Jazz
Atlantic, 1964. Very Good
Massive early work from Hubert Laws – and a set that really shows some more the more Latin and soul sides of his talents! Tracks here have a tight punch throughout – with some great New York 60s rhythms that feature a young Chick (then called "Armando") Corea on piano, then a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clare Fischer Big Band

Thesaurus
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint-
An unusual session from the great Clare Fischer – although probably his best-known record as well! Clare cut many other jazz sides in a smaller, more intimate setting – but this album features his full talents as a larger arranger – working with a hip ensemble, and turning in ... Hubert Laws

Wild Flower
Atlantic, 1972. Sealed

Lee Morgan

Sidewinder
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good-
A jazz classic if there ever was one – and the best-selling album ever by Lee Morgan, thanks to the use of the title track in a car commercial! Sure, you've probably heard "The Sidewinder" enough that you think you know the album already – but the rest of the tunes really ... LP, Vinyl record album
