On Strings Of Blue

LP (Item 578184) ABC, Mid 60s — Condition: Sealed

(Stereo pressing. Shrinkwrap is lightly shopworn, with a hole in front. Cover has a small cutout hole.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Della Reese

Della On Stage
RCA, 1962. Sealed
Della swings it hard this live set from the 60s – with backing from John Cotter, in a style that's jazzy, bouncy, and swinging! Even the mellower tracks are done in a tightly snapping style that's every bit the best approach that Della brought to vocals – a bit of soul in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Della Reese

Amen
Jubilee, 1958. Very Good+
A gospel session, as you might guess from the title – and one that not only shows Della's roots in church music, but which also hints at the spiritual role she'd play in later life! The setting here is somewhat spare and stripped down – mostly just piano and organ in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Della Reese

Melancholy Baby
Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good
Della Reese definitely takes the "melancholy" in the title seriously here – and turns the set into one of her most blue-tinged records from the early days! The backings are full, but never too lush – handled perfectly by Sid Bass, who shades in the corners with some sad ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie & Roy

Free & Easy
ABC, 1957. Very Good
One of the grooviest records ever by the wonderful vocal team of Jackie & Roy – a sweetly swinging 50s session, with great LA jazz backings from the orchestra of Bill Holman! There's a breezy vibe to the whole thing that's years ahead of its time – not pop harmony vocals, but an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Glory Of Love
ABC, 1956. Very Good
One of our favorite albums by the team of Jackie & Roy – a really special little set that features small combo backing, great tunes, and some of the best vocals of their early career! Sing A Song Of Basie (ABC pressing)
ABC, Late 50s. Very Good
One of the first albums ever by this legendary jazz vocal group! LHR do the incredible – and create a set of vocal renditions of standards by the Basie band, putting jazzy lyrics in to replace the instrumental solos, but keeping the same vibe as the original tracks. Lovesick
Verve, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Wonderfully groovy work from the team of Jackie Cain & Roy Kral – a set that has the pair moving into much hipper modes for the 60s, and really taking off from the greatness of earlier records! Backing is still by Roy's core trio, with acoustic piano at the lead – but the addition ... LP, Vinyl record album
Reprise, 1967. Very Good+
A beautiful little album that shows a whole new side of Sinatra! Frank's a bit late on the bossa game – but the record's a wonderfully gentle batch of bossa nova tunes, performed with musical and occasional vocal accompaniment by Jobim, and larger orchestral backings by Claus Ogerman. Time After Time
A&M, 1967. Very Good+
Jaunty, sprightly grooves from the wonderful Chris Montez – one of his sublime 60s classics for A&M Records, done with beautiful backings from the great Nick DeCaro!
