Opus De Bop – The Savoy Sessions

LP (Item 577739) Savoy, Mid 40s — Condition: Sealed

A great collection of Stan Getz' earliest sides for Savoy – 78rpm material from some of his youngest years on record, accompanied by Kai Winding, Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne, Hank Jones, Max Roach, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Duke Jordan, Jimmy Raney, and many more!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s isssue, still sealed!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An excellent non-US album from Stan Getz – and a real rarity too! Really beautiful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Brothers
Prestige, 1949/1952. Very Good+
A classic Prestige LP that compiles earlier sides by Getz – four tunes from a 1949 session recorded under Stan Getz & His Four Brothers, with Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore – all blowing with Getz in a real "brothers-like" sax section sound. The remaining ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1955. Very Good+
Stan Getz makes a key musical trip to Sweden – to showcase his affection for a jazz scene that had been growing strongly in the postwar years – often in directions that were similar to Stan's own sound at the time! Boyd Raeburrn

Jewells
Savoy, Late 40s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold

Dexter Gordon & Wardell Gray

Hunt
Savoy, 1947. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
A rarity from the bop era – hard-blowing tracks that run for a duration that's way longer than the standard three minutes of most 78rpm singles. Some of the best Art Pepper work you'll ever find! Boyd Raeburn

Man With The Horns
Savoy, Early 50s. Very Good
One of a few excellent sides that Boyd Raeburn cut for the Savoy label – all of them perfect pieces of modernist swing, with a groove that should have made him a bigger player! This one's got Raeburn working with a number of different groups – and a few tracks have vocals, but most are ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, Mid 40s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A nicely distilled collection pulled together for issue in the mid 70s, of Charlie Parker's work for Savoy Records – done between the years 1944-1948, with some of the best talents in the bop business! Some of the other Savoy Parker sets have been a bit too overstuffed with alternate takes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Earland

Living Black
Prestige, 1970. Very Good+
A stone cold live date from Charles Earland – recorded in Newark, at just the sort of club where he got his start! The tracks are quite long and openly grooving – even more so than Charles' killer studio sets from the time – and there's a bit of a harder edge here too, thanks ... LP, Vinyl record album
