Opus De Bop – The Savoy Sessions

LP (Item 577739) Savoy, Mid 40s — Condition: Near Mint-

A great collection of Stan Getz' earliest sides for Savoy – 78rpm material from some of his youngest years on record!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Fantasy, Late 50s. Very Good
A killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan would take in later years: his bossa sides, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea. The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dynasty
Verve, 1971. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A great lost album from Stan Getz! The record features Stan in a totally new setting, playing with some relatively unfamiliar French talents – Eddie Louiss on organ, Rene Thomas on guitar, and Bernard Lubat on drums. Louiss is incredible, and has a free spacey sound that recalls Larry Young ... LP, Vinyl record album

Reflections
Verve, 1963. Very Good
A lost chapter in the Stan Getz sound of the 60s – an album that features Stan blowing in front of some beautiful backdrops set by Lalo Schifrin and Claus Ogerman! The sound is super mellow – dreamy, but never sleepy – with Stan blowing in these soulful, magical, exploratory ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz makes a key musical trip to Sweden – to showcase his affection for a jazz scene that had been growing strongly in the postwar years – often in directions that were similar to Stan's own sound at the time! Brothers & Other Mothers
Savoy, Late 40s/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
2 LP reissue of some of the great early Stan Getz sessions for Savoy, with lots of great players like Serge Chaloff, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore. There's loads of unissued tracks on here, and a lot of stuff that was only out on 78. The notes are good, and this stuff is hard to find elsewhere. LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Howard McGhee had a bit of a checkered recording career over the years, but the material he cut for Savoy was some of his strongest – and showed the bop trumpter as one of the more innovative players of his generation, willing to experiment with more interesting arrangements and styles than ... Trumpets All Out (Savoy)
Savoy, Mid 50s. Very Good+
As you might guess from the title, the album's an all-trumpet affair, one that features 5 different players on the instrument – Art Farmer, Emmet Berry, Charlie Shavers, Ernie Royal, and Harold Baker – supported by spare rhythm from the trio of Don Abney on piano, Wendell Marshall on ... Savoy/Signal, Mid 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
An interesting record that collects the output of the rare Savoy subsidiary Signal. The label released recordings in the Music Minus One vein, but used the then new stereo technology to separate out the soloist, and always featured top flight soloists and rhythm sections. For this reissue the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, 1955. Sealed
One of the best-known 50s jazz sessions from the Savoy label – a laidback classic that's a great illustration of the label's shift in modes after the early bop years! The setting here is relatively informal – with Milt Jackson as the ersatz leader, working almost in blowing session ... LP, Vinyl record album
