Moonchild (Muse)

CD (Item 575847) Muse, 1991 — Condition: Used

CD

✈
A later set by soul jazz vibist Johnny Lytle – but a great one too, and a date that's done with a straight ahead mode that shows he's still swinging hard! The record's a bit less groove-oriented than some of Lytle's earlier efforts, but in ways that really focus on his longer-wind chops as a jazz soloist – set up here in great company that includes Houston Person on tenor, Benny Green on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Cecil Brooks III on drums. Brooks' drums ensure that the upbeat tunes have just the right sort of snap that Lytle always likes – and the mellower tunes show a really wonderful sensitive side of his playing that's filled with warm tones and great colors from the vibes. Titles include "Meet Benny Bailey", "Caravan", "Moonchild", "Well You Needn't", and "Watch What Happens".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Johnny Lytle

Possum Grease
Muse, 1992. Used
A really kicking little set from the great Johnny Lytle – one of the best of his albums from later years, and a set that's got more than enough soul to live up to the image on the cover! Johnny's vibes are as great as always – they never seem to dim over the years – and the rest ... CD

Buck Hill

Impulse
Muse, 1992. Used
Buck Hill blows mean and lean here – working in a quartet with a solidly soulful finish, one that's perfect for his well-schooled sound on the tenor sax! The album's got a really non-nonsense feel – production from Houston Person that keeps the sound plenty clean, and very focused on ... CD

Hannibal Marvin Peterson

One With The Wind
Muse, 1993. Used
Hannibal made some mighty wonderful music in the 70s – and he really carries that tradition strongly forward on this overlooked gem from the early 90s! The album's not as boldly righteous as some of Peterson's dates for MPS, but it's still got a hell of a lot of soul – a well-blown ... CD

Kenny Burrell

Handcrafted
Muse/32 Jazz, 1978. Used
An obscure little session from Kenny Burrell – recorded at the end of the 70s, and with a very laidback feel! The set was produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the mellower side of the jazz spectrum. And for the record, she's ... CD
Muse, 1972. Used
Later work by Don Patterson – one of the best, and most free-swinging of the 60s soul jazz organists – recorded here in the early 70's, with the same tight organ jazz feel as his records for Prestige! Eddie Daniels plays tenor, alto, and soprano on the album – and the rest of the ... CD

Kenny Barron

Sunset To Dawn
Muse, 1973. Used
Sublime 70s work from Kenny Barron – a record that really has him stretching out strongly from his roots in the 60s, and sounding almost even more inventive than on some of his later material as well! Kenny's playing a fair bit of keyboards on the set – showing a wonderful sensitivity ... CD

Cecil Brooks III

Smokin' Jazz
Muse, 1993. Used
Cecil's smoking on the cover, and he's smoking on the record too – really cooking things up in the best old school soul jazz style of his Muse Records years! The album was recorded live in New Jersey, and it's proof that plenty of great jazz was still coming from west of the Hudson in the ... CD

Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker

Carnegie Hall Concert
CTI, 1975. Used
A surprisingly wonderful 70s meeting between Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker – recorded live, with sweet electric touches from CTI – in a style that shouldn't work so well, but which really comes off great! The approach is simple – Mulligan and Baker solo in a manner that's a bit ... CD
