Thelonious Monk & Gerry Mulligan — Mulligan Meets Monk ... LP 48.99
An unlikely pair, but a great one here – and the record's one of those few magical moments where bringing together unusual partners actually works! Mulligan's cool hardly seems a match for Monk's angular modernism, but together the players seem to strike a middle ground that resonates with the strength of both – a sound that cuts a bit more edge on Gerry's normally smooth baritone, and which still lets Monk's keys flow into wonderful twists and turns. Rhythm is by the great bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Shadow Wilson – and titles include the Monk classics "Straight No Chaser", "Rhythm A Ning", "Round Midnight", and "I Mean You" – plus a version of Mulligan's "Decidedly".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Bennie Green

Walking Down
Prestige/OJC, 1956. Used
A stone classic from the great Bennie Green – working here at a sharp 50s level that easily makes him one of the most hard-edged players in jazz at the time! Bennie's rooted in bop, but has plenty of deeper soulful elements too – a groove that others would expand more in the soul jazz ... CD

Mal Waldron

Mal 3 – Sounds
Prestige/OJC, 1958. Used
A really wonderful album from Mal Waldron – quite different than most of his other records from the 50s, and done with a righteous undercurrent that almost points the way towards the Strata East generation of the 70s! The set's one of Mal's few 50s albums as a leader to feature horns ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1958. Used
A killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan Getz would take in later years – his bossa sessions, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea! The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that ... CD

Mal Waldron

Mal 2
Prestige/OJC, 1957. Used
A stunningly powerful batch of hardbop tracks from Mal Waldron – one that's different both from his trio material of the time, and from some of the ways that he works on the Prestige blowing sessions of the period – as Waldron is clearly the leader here, and really works magic with a ... CD

Phil Woods

Woodlore
Prestige/OJC, 1955. Used
Early work by one of the greatest voices on the alto sax in the 1950s – a player who worked with the deftness of other altoists of his generation, but a depth of soul usually reserved for the tenor! The setting is simple and perfect – as Phil Woods blows at the helm of a quartet that ... CD

Benny Golson

Groovin' With Golson
New Jazz/OJC, 1958. Used
A wonderful small combo session from tenorist Benny Golson – one of a few key albums like this from the early years! Although Golson is perhaps best known as a lively arranger in the modern idiom, he's also a kick-ass tenor player when he wants to be – and on this classic, he ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used
A beautiful little record – and one of the only two records made by the obscure (but wonderful) JFK Quintet! The quintet have a sound that's unlike any other combo we can think of – sharp-edged and modern at one moment, but also warmly soulful the next – all at a level that's ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used
Sublime work from Yusef Lateef – and proof that he could be exotic and swinging at the same time! The three "faces" of the set are Lateef's work on tenor, flute, and oboe – each of which get a few tracks to themselves – as Lateef works with a core Detroit group of Hugh ... CD

Joe Chambers

Dance Kobina
Blue Note, 2023. Used
A fresh new chapter of the long legacy of drummer Joe Chambers – a key instrumental force in the hipper reaches of the Blue Note label in the late 60s, but an artist who seems to finally be catching up with his own work as a leader after all these years! Joe is every bit as wonderful here as ... CD

Randal Fisher

Everywhere To Be Lost
Village LA, 2022. Used
Randal Fisher blows tenor with a tone that's really unique – one that we can't easily explain in words, but which has a sense of individuality that marks the record right from the start, and continues to delight as the set rolls on! There's kind of a crisp, higher-tone in his instrument ... CD
