Wonderful late work from Jack Teagarden – pulled from his excellent years at Roulette Records – which are maybe some of our favorite! Jack's hardly a maverick here – not really on the front line of jazz, but definitely finding a way to reinvent his sound for the 60s – with this excellent mode that shows all his years on the planet, inflected with a maturity in his style that he never had in earlier decades. In way, Teagarden's shift is a bit like the way that Coleman Hawkins and Pee Wee Russell were working in their later years – although maybe a bit more subtle, and often hidden behind his charms – which are undeniable, especially when he's singing. The group features trumpet, clarinet, piano, bass, and drums – in addition to Jack's voice and trombone – and titles include "Ever Lovin Baby", "Blue Dawn", "Aunt Hager's Country Home", "Roundtable Romp", and "Ain't Cha Glad". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
