Kenny G Live

LP (Item 574277) Arista, 1989 — Condition: Sealed
2LP Gatefold
Recorded live August 26th and 27th, 1989, at the Opera House in Seattle, WA. Musicans include Bruce Carter on drums, John Raymond on guitar, Vail Johnson on bass, Robert Damper on keys, and special guest vocalist Michael Bolton.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Still sealed with hype sticker!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dudu Pukwana

Diamond Express
Arista/Freedom, 1974. Near Mint-
One of a rare few albums cut as a leader by reedman Dudu Pukwana – maybe best known for his role in the South African jazz group The Blue Notes, and an undeniable force on the London scene in the late 60s and early 70s! This special set is a great merging of both worlds – as Pukwana ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jay Hoggard

Days Like These
Arista/GRP, 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great setting for Hoggard's vibes – with help from Dave Grusin, who also arranged – as well as Dave Valentin, Marcus Miller, Patti Austin, and Chico Freeman. Titles include "Samba Pa Negra", "West End Dancer", "Kalima's Garden Song", and "Days Like ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arista/Freedom, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Excellent Artista/Freedom reissue that brings together the full set from Cecil's 1962 performance at Cafe Monmartre. He's playing here in a trio that has Jimmy Lyons on alto and Sonny Murray on drums, and the music's a key link between his later seventies stuff, and his earlier work that you can ... Bobby Hutcherson

San Francisco
Blue Note, 1971. Very Good+
Genius, pure genius! This album's possibly the most perfectly realized set from the team of Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Harold Land on reeds – a pair who hit territory that's slightly funky, but which is also still touched by the modal spiritualism of some of their earlier work together! ... Horace Silver

Stylings Of Silver
Blue Note, 1957. Very Good
A great Horace Silver album – and one of the rarest! The record features some top-line material that virtually defines Silver's post-Jazz Messengers sound – tracks that come out with a hard and heavy groove, yet which also have a lightness in the mix too – a sense of play and ... Charles Mingus

Pre Bird
Mercury, 1960. Near Mint-
An unusual chapter in the label-hopping career of Charles Mingus – a one-off date recorded for Mercury right after Mingus' legendary sessions for Columbia! The format here may well be Mingus' most ambitious to date – as the album features larger groups than before, exploring a range of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

New & Old Gospel
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+
One of Jackie McLean's last "new thing" albums for Blue Note – and a very unique record that features Ornette Coleman on trumpet! The sound here is stark and hard – slight hints of the soulfulness that the "gospel" in the title might imply, mixed with the angular ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

At The Cafe Bohemia Volume 1
Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good+
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group was less of an Art Blakey project, and more of an all-around affair – as you might guess from a lineup that also includes Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass! The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good
Classic Blue Note work by Horace Silver – the stuff that soul jazz legends are made of, and an album that showed he was destined to be a huge force away from the Jazz Messengers! Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook hold down the frontline with Horace – playing in a mellifluous style that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bud Shank

Jazz At Cal Tech
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good+
A beautifully melodic session from Bud Shank – one of his great late 50s dates with reedman Bob Cooper – recorded in quintet format with an easygoing groove! Shank plays both alto and flute, and Cooper tenor and oboe – pairings that sound great hear as they shift back and forth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

Bluesnik
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good
A crackling date from Jackie McLean – a set that's got a more expansive feel than some of his earlier Blue Note work – filled with fire, far from the 50s – and really pointing the way towards his new directions to come! There's a hint of modernism in the mix, mostly on the tone ... LP, Vinyl record album
