Louis Armstrong Plays WC Handy (second cover)

LP (Item 57328) Columbia, 1954 — Condition: Very Good+
Mid 50s, and Louis is going back to his roots – playing a set of compositions by WC Handy – working with a small combo that includes Barrett Deems on drums, Arvell Shaw on bass, Trummy Young on trombone, and Barney Bigard on clarinet. Vocals are by Louis and Velma Middleton – and titles include "Atlanta Blues", "Chantez Les Bas", "Loveless Love", "Memphis Blues", "St Louis Blues", and "Beale Street Blues".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. A nice copy.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Miles Davis

ESP
Columbia, 1965. Very Good+
An album of dark and subtle beauty – and still one of our favorite Miles Davis albums of all time! The set's not as earth-shattering as some of Davis' other work of the 60s, but that's why we like it so much – because the emerging genius of the group with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, ... A definite delight from Ronnie Foster – a post-Blue Note set that actually has the keyboardist sounding better than ever! Herbie Hancock

Perfect Machine
Columbia, 1988. Very Good+
Herbie's still in electro-grooving mode here – not groundbreaking as earlier records, but still handled by Bill Laswell, and with a tackhead groove pretty firmly in place. A rare slice of the career of this famous and short-lived jazz duo – tapes that were recorded in 1955 at the legendary Bee Hive niteclub in Chicago, but not issued until the end of the 70s, in this smashing 2LP set that was produced by Max himself! The material offers a strong contrast to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Bundle Of Joy
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A bundle of soul from Freddie Hubbard – one that has him blowing beautifully over full arrangements from Bert DeCoteux – the 70s super-soul maestro who really brings a new sound to Hubbard's music!
