Brilliant hardbop work from Blue Mitchell – a rare set recorded at a time when Blue was mostly working in an electric mode for other labels, but is caught here in a sharp-edged acoustic date that really takes us back to his sound in the 60s! The sound is wonderfully tight – rhythm work by Victor Feldman on piano, John Heard on bass, and Dick Berk on drums – and the great altoist Dick Spencer joins Blue in the frontline, adding his own raspy tone to help further deepen the sound of the set. Titles include "Stablemates", "Portrait Of Jenny", "Ow", and "Gettin Sentimental Over Blue".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Bring It Home To Me
Blue Note (Japan), 1966. Used
Genius work from trumpeter Blue Mitchell – one of his most solid sides as a leader from the 60s, and a well-deserved treasure in the Blue Note catalog! The album's quite different than the straight soul jazz of Blue's early days on Riverside – or the more arranged dates of the late 60s ... CD

Out Of The Blue
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used
Nice hardbop from Blue Mitchell! He's heading up a quintet with Benny Golson, and Golson brings a tightness to the session that's missing from some of Blue's other Riverside albums. Art Blakey's on drums, and the bass position's held by either Sam Jones or Paul Chambers, both of which make for a ... CD

Cup Bearers
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used
One of the first albums to really show Blue Mitchell's genius as a leader – recorded past the more formulaic bop modes of some of his other Riverside sessions, and handled with a lyrical edge that really gets at the best aspects of his playing. Of course, part of the reason for this is that ... CD

A cool 70s session from Flip Phillips – the tenorist who really rose to fame during the early years of Verve Records, then hardly got a chance to record as a leader after the early 50s! This sweet set shows Flip still in very fine formation – blowing with a well-rounded sound on the ... CD
