Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Sony (Japan), 1982. Used
Blood's groundbreaking LP that gave a name and energy to the 80's Black Rock movement. Recorded post-Ornette, but with a wild sound that certainly shows his influence. Cuts include "Open House", "Black Rock", "Moon Beam", "Overnight", and "We Bop". CD

James Blood Ulmer

Odyssey
CBS/Sony, 1983. Used
One of our favorite Ulmer records, probably because there's a nice groove running underneath most of the numbers, in a sort of post-Prime Time 80s out-funk sort of way. It never drops into a flat out back beat, but there's always some sense of time, while Ulmer's guitar and Charles Burnham's ... CD

Tracks include "Trouble In Mind", "Ghetto Child", "Who's Been Talkin", "The Hustle Is On", and "Are You Glad To Be In America?". CD

James Blood Ulmer

Are You Glad To Be In America?
DIW (Japan), 1980. Used
A classic bit of Black Rock from James Blood Ulmer – and a record that was issued by Rough Trade in the UK, giving it a surprising influence on the post-punk scene of the time! In a way, Ulmer's groove here has a lot of punky-funk in the mix – thanks to some heavy electric bass from ... CD
Atlantic/Label M, 1965. Used
A stone classic from Roland Kirk – and a record that beautifully balances his modern ideas and playful energy – as you might guess from the title! While posing as the "whistleman", Roland's also pushing the boundaries of jazz a few steps forward too – not just in modern ... CD
Label M, 1960s. Used
A healthy dose of organ jazz – with classic cuts that feature work by Leon Spencer, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Roach, John Patton, Jack McDuff, and Charles Earland! CD

Bobby Hutcherson

Dialogue
Blue Note (Japan), 1965. Used
One of Bobby Hutcherson's most important albums ever – and an essential piece of "new thing" jazz that ranks up there with such key Blue note sessions of the genre as Tony Williams' album Life Time, Dolphy's Out To Lunch, and Jackie McLean's One Step Beyond! Hutcherson's sound on ... CD

Phil Woods

Chasin The Bird
Venus (Japan), 1997. Used
Phil Woods is one of those folks who still sounds great as the years go on – never failing to grab us with his amazing lines on alto sax, and his ever-creative energy on his solos! This album's got less of the Charlie Parker aspects than you might guess from the title – although there's ... CD

Max Light

Henceforth
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2023. Used
A set that's headed up by guitarist Max Light, who wrote most of the material on the set – but one that's got some equally strong contributions from tenorist Noah Preminger, who's got this great way of weaving lines around the guitar – all while getting this deft rhythm accompaniment ... CD

Portico Quartet

Isla
Real World (UK), 2009. Used
Jack Wyllie on saxophone and electronics, Milo Fitzpatrick on double bass, Duncan Bellamy on drums, piano and mariamba, Nick Mulvey on percussion and idiophone. CD
Cobblestone/SME (Japan), 1972. Used
A return to basics after Sonny Stitt's late 60s Varitone and funk experiments – all-bop and all soul all the way through, and recorded with a tight quartet that features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums! The style's a bit like Sonny's work of the late 50s, ... CD
