Sonny Criss, Gerald Wiggins, Erroll Garner, Stan Getz

LP (Item 572106) Crown, Early 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
Surprisingly great bop material from the LA scene – issued in a package that's no great shakes, but pretty wonderful from a music perspective.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sonny Criss

Up, Up & Away
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+
A fantastically beautiful album that strongly proves the old jazz adage "It's not the song, but the singer"! The "singer" in this case is alto player Sonny Criss – and the songs are a middle of the road batch of compositions, like "Sunny", "Willow Weep For ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Farrell

Upon This Rock
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Massive music from funky reedman Joe Farrell – quite possibly our favorite of his legendary 70s run for CTI – and that's saying a lot, given how great those records are! There's a lean, edgey groove to the set that's totally great – a lot more bite than usual for CTI, thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ronnie Laws

Classic Masters
Capitol, 1984. Near Mint-
The best of Ronnie Laws' 70s material, plus a few new tracks as well – an album that definitely lives up to its Classic Masters title! The music is awash in both jazz and soul modes – jazz, thanks to Ronnie's well-played solos, which soar out in an amazing blend of new ideas and on-the- ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

New Wave
Philips, 1962. Near Mint-
A lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob Thiele & Gabor Szabo

Light My Fire
Impulse, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent grooviness – and typical of the mad instrumental LPs that showed up on Impulse when they weren't cutting high-minded jazz! The record has a nice mix of easy funky jazz and pop psychedelia – performed by a range of groovy players conducted by Bob Thiele, and featuring Tom ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

One Step Beyond
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good-
An amazing album – simply groundbreaking, and a key turn for Jackie McLean! The record features a group of hip young players – including a very young Tony Williams, plus Grachan Moncur III, Bobby Hutcherson, and Eddie Kahn – all playing in a spare contemplative modernist mode ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1967. Very Good+
One of the most unusual Roland Kirk albums of the 60s – his only session for Verve, and a record cut with a slightly different feel than some of his work for Mercury or Atlantic! The core group's an unusual one – a quartet that features a young Lonnie Smith on piano, plus Ronnie ... LP, Vinyl record album
Colpix, Early 60s. Sealed
A fantastic Randy Weston album – and one of the albums that really showed the world all the new ideas he was cooking up in jazz! The style is very much as promised by the title – as drawn from African inspiration as his previous Uhuru Afrika record – but much more fused towards ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

Jacknife
Blue Note, 1965/1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Two great 60s sessions from Jackie McLean – only one of which has ever been issued on CD! The first session later came out as Jacknife – and features Lee Morgan and Charles Tolliver on twin trumpets – a very hip lineup – with Larry Willis on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Dorham

Trompeta Toccata
Blue Note, 1964. Sealed
A wonderfully free-thinking set by Kenny Dorham – and a record that really breaks from his earlier work! The album's not exactly experimental, but it features longer tracks with a looser approach than some of Dorham's sweeter shorter work – more in a rhythmically progressive mode that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ike Turner & The Kings Of Rhythm

Black Man's Soul
Pompeii, 1969. Very Good+
Great stuff – and one of the funkiest albums that Ike Turner ever recorded – done during a late 60s moment when his fame with Tina Turner was really on the rise – but much more like some funky 45 take on the pre-Tina work he'd been doing in the 50s! This set's a batch of obscure ... LP, Vinyl record album

Laid Back

Keep Smiling
Sire, 1983. Very Good+
It takes a record like this one to remind us just what a magical crossover time the post-disco, post-punk days of the early 80s could be! Take two white guys from Denmark – Tim Stahl and John Guldberg – give them a drum machine and some funky beats, and out comes the breakdance classic ... LP, Vinyl record album
