Ramsey Lewis & The Gentlemen Of Jazz Volume 2

LP (Item 57145) Argo, 1958 — Condition: Very Good+
Ramsey and the trio are on the front in tuxedoes, top hats, and tails – but the overall sound of the record is much more in keeping with their soul jazz grooves of the late 50s – not necessarily gentlemanly, but with a worldly appreciation for a variety of styles of music, and perhaps a bit more of a flowery touch than in later years. Titles include "Black Is The Color", "Brother John", "Seven Valleys", "Delilah", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split top seam, small corner bend, light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ramsey Lewis

In Crowd
Argo, 1965. Very Good+
One of the biggest jazz albums of the 60s – and a crucial crossover set from the legendary Ramsey Lewis trio! The record's a live one, which gives the group a perfect chance to show off their special genius – not just soulful grooves from Ramsey on piano, but wickedly sharp and playful ... Ramsey Lewis

Love Notes
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A great little album of mid 70s funk from Ramsey Lewis – very much in the mode of his Earth, Wind, & Fire related work – no surprise, since the album's dedicated to Charles Stepney, whose influence was such a key part of the sound of the group, and of some of Ramsey's other Kalimba-p ... Ramsey Lewis

Wade In The Water
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Classic pop soul jazz from the inventor of the genre! Ramsey's funky piano is backed by some soulful arrangements handled by Richard Evans – in a really tight style that includes great percussion, electric bass, and an all-out kicking style that makes even the mellowest tunes groove! Evans ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Groover
Cadet, Mid 60s/1972. Very Good
A set of classic Ramsey Lewis recordings with his trio of Eldee Young and Redd Holt, all of which were recorded during the 60s for Argo/Chess, but not released until this set in 1972. The tracks all came from the same live set that spawned the group's hit single version of "Hang On ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Maiden Voyage
Cadet, 1968. Very Good
One of the key records from the Cadet/Concept scene in late 60s Chicago – a tremendous collaboration between pianist Ramsey Lewis and arranger Charles Stepney – and the kind of record that took soul and jazz to a whole new level! Ramsey on his own is great enough at this point – ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Hey It's James Moody
Argo, 1959. Very Good
A magnificent little album – one of James Moody's first collaborations with arranger Tom McIntosh – one of the most sensitive jazz voices of his time. McIntosh works in a world of many tones and colors – and he really pushes Moody past straighter solo approaches, into a mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

Zoot Sims

Zoot (Argo)
Argo, 1956. Good
An obscure session for Zoot Sims – but a nice one! The group's a quartet – with Johnny Williams on piano, Gus Johnson on drums, and Knobby Totah on bass – and Zoot's blowing in an unfettered setting that reminds us a bit of Sonny Stitt in similar settings at the same time! ... Chubby Jackson

Chubby's Back
Argo, 1957. Near Mint-
With a name like Chubby, the set ought to be a snoozer – but it swings nicely, thanks to some strong bass work by Jackson! The group's a Chicago ensemble, featuring lesser-known players of the 50s – like Vito Price, Cy Touff, Don Lamond, and Jimmy Gourley – plus trombone by Bill ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1960s. Near Mint-

Horace Silver

Sterling Silver
Blue Note, 1958/1979. Near Mint-
Excellent 70's issue of a number of tracks recorded by Horace Silver in the late 50's – including some (then) unissued material, and alternate versions of popular tracks, recorded with different bands than on the hit. Highlights include a vocal version of "Senor Blues" (with Bill ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Soapsuds Soapsuds
Artists House, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Ornette's great albums for the obscure Artists House label, and different from the one that he recorded with James Blood Ulmer, which was more of a straight-on Harmelodic work. This one's got him playing a set of tender sensitive duets with bassist and longtime accompanyist Charlie Haden. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Harris

Is It In
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good-
One of Eddie's groovier Varitone albums, and a record that has a very electric sound to it! At times, Eddie's electric sax is so off-beat that you'd think he was playing a synthesizer instead of a sax, but in true Harris form, he always keeps it funky, and even the weird sounds have a great groove ...
