We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Grand Prix
MGM, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
Quite an important soundtrack – penned for a mid 60s French/American production directed by John Frankenheimer and starring James Garner, Yves Montand, Toshiro Mifume, and Francoise Hardy! The film's an auto racing one – in case you couldn't guess from the title – but the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Subterraneans
MGM, 1959. Very Good
A beat-era film classic – Andre Previn's jazzy score to the film based on Jack Kerouac's novel The Subterraneans! Previn's working here in a mode that's sometimes lush and emotive, but often more upbeat and jazzy – and performed by a host of great jazz players that include Gerry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paris When It Sizzles
Reprise, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Audrey Hepburn's back in Paris again – fooling around with another older man! This time it's William Holden, but fortunately Nelson Riddle's along for the ride to keep the music nice and groovy. Most of the stuff on here's kind of Frenchy instrumental, with the cliched kind of sound you'd ... LP, Vinyl record album

Swarm
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
A chilling soundtrack for one of the last great Irwin Allen disaster films of the 70s – The Swarm, the story of a bunch of bees that go crazy! The score was penned by Jerry Goldsmith, whose talent for creating off-beat string passages makes for some great "bee-like" moments in this ... LP, Vinyl record album

Geisha Boy
Jubilee, 1958. Good+
Jerry Lewis as a boy geisha? Sounds like a pretty wild movie – but the soundtrack is a bit more straightforward than you might expect – a great mix of rich Hollywood scoring with some very nice "exotic" touches thrown in for good measure – a surprisingly top-shelf ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buhaina
Prestige, 1973. Very Good-
An amazing album that has Art Blakey completely reinventing himself for the 70s! Blakey shifts from straight hardbop to kind of a modal soul jazz groove, touched with some of the electric playing of the younger jazz generation, but not enough to qualify as fusion or funk. Instead, he's working ... LP, Vinyl record album
