We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Greatest Ray Charles
Atlantic, 1950s. Very Good
The title says it all – as the set features 9 of Ray's greatest cuts for Atlantic, a mixture of early soul and harder R&B numbers, wrapped up in a very classic cover! Titles include "Heartbreaker", "Tell Me How Do You Feel", "What'd I Say", "Talkin Bout ... LP, Vinyl record album
Genius Hits The Road
ABC, 1960. Very Good-
A stunning standout from Ray Charles' years on ABC Records – and a set that brings in a bit of hard-swinging jazz to the country-styled groove Ray was hitting at the time! Backings are by Ralph Burns, who keeps things pretty hip – not as modern as some of his 50s charts for other ... LP, Vinyl record album
Genius Of Ray Charles
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good
Some of Ray's biggest tracks for Atlantic, including many remakes of standards like "Just For A Thrill", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin", "Am I Blue", and "It Had To Be You". You've heard it all a million times, but it's still beautiful stuff – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ask Rufus
ABC, 1977. Very Good- Gatefold
One of our favorite albums ever from Rufus and Chaka Khan – a sublime 70s set in which the group's sound totally comes together, and finds a really special sound that's all its own! The blend of elements here is perfect – the group's funky jazz instrumentation, and Chaka Khan's warm ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1974. Very Good- Gatefold
A pretty great little album from the Four Tops – the kind of excellent sleeper that shows how strong the group stayed year after year! At some level, the album's got a similar relation to the group's Motown career as do Lamont Dozier's albums at ABC – and the arrangements by Gil Askey, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ninety Day Cycle People
ABC, 1974. Very Good+
Wild work by Charles Wright – recorded in the post-103rd Street Rhythm Band years, with a really trippy sound! The album's got a few really messed up numbers – ones that have Charles ranting and grooving with incredible energy, especially on the cuts "90 Day Cycle People" and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Woman Of The World
ABC, 1975. Very Good+
Pretty nice 70's female soul stuff, recorded by a woman that we know nothing about, and with arrangements by Michael Omartian. The groove is very nice, in sort of a First Choice kind of way, and the tracks include "Superbad", "Don't Mistreat My Babies", "Did I Give Up Much ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles & Betty Carter
ABC, 1961. Very Good
A classic album of soul duets – and one of the deeper records cut by Betty during the 60s! The arrangements are by the great Marty Paich, and although there's some singers in the background, the overall sound is still pretty nice and soulful. Betty's high voice works well with Ray's raspy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gene Chandler Situation
Mercury, 1970. Sealed
Killer stuff from Gene! After recording a few sadly overlooked albums for Brunwsick, Gene hit big big big with this killer record on Mercury! The record virtually defines the Chicago soul sound of the late 60s – with arrangements by Tom Tom, production by Gene, and a great loping soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
