Ben Webster – The Horn

LP (Item 567139) Circle, 1944 — Condition: Very Good+
Great 40s material – with Hot Lips Page on trumpet!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Circle (Germany), 1984. Sealed
One of the really fantastic sessions that Chet Baker recorded for the Circle label in the 80s – and one that's got a bit more umph than some of the others, as it features work from Bob Mover on alto and soprano, and Jon Earley on flugelhorn – in a drum-less group with Dennis Luxion on ... Revolutionary Ensemble

People's Republic
Horizon, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
A surprising release on A&M for the Revolutionary Ensemble – formerly a much more underground group, but still sounding great here recording for a bigger label! Buddy Rich

Roar Of '74
Groove Merchant, 1973. Near Mint-
One of the funkiest Buddy Rich albums of the 70s – a mad screaming affair that's overflowing with great tunes! The band on the set is very full – with a heck of a lot of trumpets in the brass section, set next to searing sax work by the great Pat LaBarbera. But even better is the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Tate

Madison Beat
Harmony, Early 60s. Very Good+
This was a follow-up to the hit Ray Bryant record, "Madison Time", and although it's an obvious attempt to cover it, it's also released by the same label (Columbia) that put out the Bryant version. Buddy Tate leads a tight little combo through "Madison Time", and a host of ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Shearing

Velvet Carpet
Capitol, 1956. Near Mint-
A key Capitol Records classic from the legendary George Shearing! The set really pushes George past his famous early jazz sides – into sublime new territory that forged a rich sound for the late 50s – a blend of his small combo gentle grooves with larger orchestrations from Dennis ... George Shearing

Latin Affair
Capitol, 1958. Near Mint-
Wonderful exotic work from George Shearing – a mixture of jazz piano, Latin percussion, and lyrical guitar and vibes – all intertwined beautifully in that unique groove that really set new standards at the time! Vanguard, 1974. Near Mint-
Heavy-duty funky fusion – an all-star group that featured Alphonse Mouzon on drums, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Mike Mandel on keyboards, and Larry Coryell on guitar. The tracks all have that heavy electric full-on fusion sound that you'd find in a rock-inspired hard-jamming group like this ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

London Underground
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
Herbie Mann rides his Memphis Underground approach over to London – where he grooves nicely in a similar jazz funk take on that scene's biggest tunes of the time! Harvey Mandel

Shangrenade
Janus, 1973. Near Mint-
A bit slicker than some of Harvey's earlier albums – but in a good way! The set's got some weirdly compressed guitar funk – sounding like it's been pressed through a play-do machine, shaped and twisted in weirdly stretched ways that make the sound of the strings sound all weird and ...
