A beautifully personal statement from the young Todd Rundgren – a set of focused, well-written tunes that point towards his pop genius to come, but also expose a few of his more ambitious modes as well. As always with Rundgren, the best tunes on the set are the mellower, quieter ones – the kind of simple, almost effortless songs that were relatively new territory in the 70s mainstream – and which would end up getting so muddied and overdone by other artists in years to come. Here, though, there's an intimacy that's wonderful – never cliched, and delivered with a style that's honest, yet never overly fragile or self-indulgent – a really fresh voice in pop, and one that helped bridge a world past younger themes from the decade before.
