We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Total Experience, 1982. Very Good+
An 80s groove classic! "Outstanding" has some wonderful funky grooves and a killer 80s sound that's complete with very fat bass pedal grooves, and some tight keyboard work! The hook's a monster, and this rare single offers up 2 versions not on the LP! 12-inch, Vinyl record
TK, 1977. Very Good-
Hit work from the legendary Peter Brown – a key player in far more club sides than we can remember, but a real chart-topper with this one! You may know the a-side, which is offered here in a nice long take with a drum break in the middle – but don't miss "Burning Love", which ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
AVI, 1976. Near Mint- (pic cover)
Nice early stuff from El Coco – with more of a funky sound than later work! "Let's Get it Together" is a nice club groover, stretched out to 6 minutes here – with some great keyboards drifting in and out of midtempo beats – almost in a P&P sort of mode, but a bit ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Sugar Hill, 1982. Near Mint-
Old school track from Sugar Hill's female trio that does not feature the classic Sugar Hill rhythm section, but instead uses a more synthetic sound, along the lines of maybe the Dazz Band. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Ze, 1978. Near Mint-
A great single from Aural Exciters – a hip New York ensemble from the late 70s, one of the seminal groups of the downtown post-disco crossover scene! The tracks feature work by August Darnell, James Chance, Bob Blank, Taana Gardner, and Coati Mundi – and is very much in the playful ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Virgin, 1991. Near Mint- (pic cover)
Frankie goes for the charts, but still with a very nice groove – and a deep bubbling under kind of sound that stays true to his Chicago roots! Still wish he would have used a real whistle, though! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Gold Mink, 1981. Very Good+
Knowledge and righteousness galore – the one and only single recorded by Rick Holmes, best known for his vocal recitations on some of the classic Cannonball Adderley albums! Rick's working here in company that's every bit as great – letting Roy Ayers come up with a sweet jazzy groove ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Salsoul, 1979. Very Good+
A nice little Latin dancefloor groover from Candido – more disco than earlier work, but in a good way, one that lets his conga go wild over the top of some smoother arrangements! The breakdown's nice and tasty, with arrangements by Joe Cain that keep the Latin grooves hard! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Sire, 1984. Very Good+ (pic cover)
An early Madonna single – featuring some sweet Niles Rodgers production and some clubby Jellybean touches on "Like A Virgin"! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Dakar, 1981. Very Good+
An 80s groove classic! This track has a killer sound that mixes bass-heavy funk with a tight electric keyboard sound – and it rips along nicely with a very catchy hook. The cut's one of our all-time favorites from this time, and it's got a hard funky groove that keeps on going! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Motown, 1978. Sealed
The closest that Marvin ever came to a disco single – a 12" version of this long funky track from the Here My Dear album, expanded to 8 minutes for the single, and featuring an instrumental version too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Epic, 1989. Near Mint-
Was there a bigger dancefloor track than this at the end of the 80s? We'd be hard pressed to think so – as Louis' uniquely grooved slow/then fast/then slow/then slower style really made the track an instant classic – loved by house fans and chart kids alike, and still actually ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
