Tenorist Don Byas may have waned a bit on the American scene by the end of the 60s – but the saxophone genius was alive and well overseas, where he got the chance to cut some amazing records like this! The set has Byas at the top of his form – maybe as openly expressive as Dexter Gordon on some of his great late 60s recordings from Europe, although with a slightly more compact, direct approach as well – one that's given a nice sort of punch here by pianist Charles Thompson, work works alongside the excellent bass of Isla Eckinger and drums fo Peter Schmidlin.
